What Article 13 Means for the Cryptocurrency Industry

By Kai Sedgwick

First they came for our privacy. Then our data. Finally they took our memes. If the more hyperbolic headlines are to be believed, the EU’s ratification of the controversial Article 13 copyright law will have repercussions for purveyors of highly shareable online content. The reality is less draconian. Nevertheless, Article 13, coupled with last year’s GDPR laws, has ramifications for all tech companies, blockchain projects included...

Six Month-Old Baby Dies Just Five Days After Receiving 13 Vaccines

According to Alisa, the doctor spent a long time deciding exactly which vaccinations Bently should receive and told Alisa that they shouldn’t give him too many. The doctor eventually decided on a total of 13 vaccinations, which Alisa now believes led to Bently’s death just five days later.

If this were not bad enough, the hospital then decided to blame Alisa for Bently’s death and called child protective services (CPS), who immediately removed her two year-old daughter from the home and gave her to the grandmother to care for her.

Fortunately, her daughter was returned a few months later.

Bestselling Author’s ‘Anti-Vax’ Post Goes Viral: “I Do Not Consent”

By Arjun Walia

It’s not often that people with a large following speak out ‘against’ vaccinations, despite the fact that many of them may feel a certain way. Sharing thoughts as to why one may not support vaccinations, especially if they are in the public eye, can lead to instant ridicule and character assassination. As a result, not many people are brave enough to speak out, but with more and more information emerging every single day about vaccinations and how they’re not as safe as they are marketed to be by their manufacturers (big pharma), speaking out against vaccinations using facts can no longer be countered or addressed with opposing evidence. There are several clear causes for concern when it comes to vaccinations, which render the idea of forced vaccinations as something extremely wrong and unethical...

The War on Drugs, Truly A War on People

By Arjun Walia

Marijuana is blamed by many people for many medical and societal ills out of ignorance – despite recent medical evidence clearing up many of these misconceptions!

Watching the local news might bring another report to the fore – another neighborhood “grow op” busted or a local man who has been charged with possession of marijuana – a plant so highly stigmatized that mere possession of its flower can land one in jail for years. Social understanding of the reality of marijuana use is slowly coming to pass; it is now uncommon for many people to believe the tired half-truths and aggressive propaganda foisted by D.A.R.E and other Law Enforcement Agencies surrounding the cannabis plant...

Immunologist Tetyana Obukhanych: Unvaccinated Children Pose “No Extra Danger to the Public”

It is often stated that those who choose not to vaccinate their children for reasons of conscience endanger the rest of the public, and this is the rationale behind most of the legislation to end vaccine exemptions currently being considered by federal and state legislators country-wide. You should be aware that the nature of protection afforded by many modern vaccines – and that includes most of the vaccines recommended by the CDC for children – is not consistent with such a statement.

Cannabis, Cryptocurrency and Compliance: One Man’s Quest to Support Unbanked Businesses

By Kai Sedgwick

Ernesto Huerta is the very embodiment of Bitcoin. As the operator of Crypto Space, a physical bitcoin exchange in Los Angeles’ San Pedro neighborhood, Huerta knows more than most about the challenges of running a cryptocurrency business while maintaining banking access and compliance. In a wide-ranging interview, the Crypto Space owner has disclosed the realities of straddling the line that separates centralized and decentralized finance, and the underhand tactics big banks deploy to crush crypto startups.

Ernesto Huerta faces a twin challenge upon awakening each morning: keeping his own business afloat, while doing the same for his clients. It’s not that business is bad – in fact, Crypto Space is booming. Rather, the realities of operating in the cryptocurrency industry mean Huerta is constantly at risk of having the rug pulled from under his feet by the banks...

Apple abandons AirPower wireless charging product

AirPower, announced in 2017, was a mat meant to charge multiple devices without needing to plug them in.

But it is understood the firm’s engineers were perhaps unable to stop the mat from getting too hot.

"After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project," the firm said.

The company did not elaborate further.

However, rumours of issues with the product had been circulating since its announcement in September 2017. At the time, Apple said it would be released to the public some time in 2018, promising a "world-class wireless charging solution".

But late last year, with the product absent from the most recent iPhone launch, noted Apple insider Jon Gruber wrote: "There are engineers who looked at AirPower’s design and said it could never work, thermally, and now those same engineers have that 'told you so' smug look on their faces."

Gay dating app Grindr declared threat to military personnel by US government

A Chinese gaming company has decided to sell the popular LGBTQ dating app Grindr LLC after a U.S. national security panel declared the app to be a threat to service members, Reuters first reported.

Beijing Kunlun Tech Co Ltd, which has owned the California-based dating app since 2016, decided to sever ties at the behest of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, which pointed to major concerns over personal data of app users — notably military and intelligence personnel — being made publicly available.

Grindr, which labels itself “the largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people,” came under intense heat last year when it was revealed that the app was releasing the HIV statuses of users without their permission.

Spanish government trying to ban acupuncture plus other forms of ‘alternative’ medicine

Is it P.C. culture? Is it pushback from big pharma and their powerful lobbyists? Who really knows why the attempt to stifle alternative medicine is so strong. But, the simple reality is that, this is a growing problem the global community must contend with.

To be clear: just because something is marketed as ‘alternative’ (or natural) medicine doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe or effective. But, governmental attempts to block public access to services like acupuncture is an enormously unwise overstep – something that the Spanish government recently enacted.

OxyContin Maker To Pay Over $200 Million To Settle Opioid Lawsuit

Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, has agreed to pay over $200 million to settle a historic lawsuit brought by the Oklahoma attorney general.

Purdue Pharma is accused of aggressively marketing the opioid painkiller and fueling a drug epidemic that left thousands dead in the state.

The settlement which was first reported by Reuters, comes after Purdue fought the attorney general in court, seeking to delay the start of the trial, which is scheduled for May 28.

The source would not say whether other drugmakers named in the suit would follow Purdue’s lead.

Oklahoma settles with OxyContin maker for $270 million

The state of Oklahoma has reached a $270 million settlement with Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, seen as pivotal in the opioid overdose crisis that has been blamed in part on misleading information the company provided to doctors about the potential for addiction.

Oklahoma sued Purdue Pharma, and its controlling Sackler family, and several other opioid manufacturers in 2017, accusing them of fraudulent marketing practices that led to thousands of overdoses and deaths. State officials have said that since 2009, more Oklahomans have died from opioids than in vehicle crashes. The remaining defendants still face trial.

The Sackler family is responsible for $75 million of the $270 million settlement, according to a person familiar with the agreement.

Libertarians for Forced Vaccinations?

By Bretigne Shaffer

It’s hard to think of a more fundamental right than the right to determine what happens to one’s own body. Forcing someone to undergo medical treatment against their will violates this most basic of rights—the right to be free from physical assault. Yet even some libertarians have jumped on the mandatory vaccination bandwagon, arguing that one person not taking every possible precaution against contracting a disease constitutes an assault against another. But this line of thinking requires some very tortured logic.
What Rights?

To begin with, nobody has a “right” to a germ-free environment outside of their own property (and good luck establishing one there)...

HOW SCIENTISTS ENGINEER FOODS TO MAKE THEM DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE

It’s no secret that the standard American diet is having a terrible effect on human health. What’s is a secret, though, is how the food industry uses science and psychology to create processed food products that are devoid of nutrition, full of chemical additives and colorings, and incredibly addictive.

In fact, the science of how food companies get customers physically, mentally and emotionally hooked on their products reads like a good conspiracy theory. Major food manufacturers know good and well that repeat customers can be made by tricking the mind and body and overriding our natural tendency to seek out healthy, satisfying foods.

'I take good care of them!' Levi's CEO insists people should NEVER put their jeans in the washer

Levi's CEO has insisted people should never machine wash their jeans to prevent wearing down the material and admitted even his favorite jeans of 10 years have never been placed in the washer.

Chip Bergh, 61, first made headlines in 2014 when he confessed people should never wash their jeans due to the fading and dullness it can cause on the material.

When speaking to CNN this week, the CEO reaffirmed his earlier statements while opening up about how his 10-year-old favorite pair still looks great despite never going through a wash cycle.

Monsanto / Bayer hit with another jury decision that confirms Roundup (glyphosate) caused man’s cancer… 9,000 more lawsuits are pending, could bankrupt Bayer

For the second time in a year, a jury has decided that the popular glyphosate weed killer Roundup caused a man’s cancer. The victory could inspire a flood of similar suits in addition to the thousands that Roundup manufacturer Monsanto is already facing, and the firm’s new owner, Bayer, could end up going bankrupt over it.

On Wednesday, the share price of Bayer dropped more than 13 percent following the unanimous decision. Investors were apparently spooked when a jury in a San Francisco federal court concluded that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in the development of Edwin Hardeman’s cancer.

According to his attorneys, the 70-year-old developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a result of using Roundup regularly over the course of 26 years to address weeds, overgrowth and poison oak on his property.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today it will consider allowing the highly drift-prone pesticide dicamba to be sprayed on up to 90 million acres of corn.

Exclusive: Lawsuit says Johnson & Johnson was opioid "kingpin"

Johnson & Johnson was the "kingpin" that fueled the country's opioid crisis, serving as a top supplier, seller and lobbyist, according to a state official leading the legal fight against the companies that helped create the crisis.

Why it matters: Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, has been the main target so far in lawsuits. But court documents show attorneys general also are trying to cast a wider net, drawing more attention to J&J's role in the global opioid market.

Driving the news: The first big trial of the opioid epidemic is set to begin in May in Oklahoma. It will set the stage for similar litigation in other states, as well as the consolidated nationwide lawsuit that has been compared to the tobacco litigation of the 1990s.

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter has asked a state court to publicly release millions of pages of confidential documents that J&J submitted during the discovery phase of the case.

Monsanto/Bayer AG’s glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer was found to be a “substantial factor” in causing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a California man, as the trial proceeds to its next phase to determine liability and damages.

In a landmark verdict that could affect numerous other cases, a federal jury in San Francisco found Roundup herbicide to be a significant contributing factor in causing the cancer of a man from Santa Rosa, California. During the trial, 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman alleged that his decades-long exposure to the Monsanto product had led him to develop a cancer that affects the immune system, called non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL).

Top US General Denies Plans to Leave 1,000 Troops in Syria

US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford issued a statement Monday denying weekend media reports that the US plans to leave around 1,000 troops in Syria, saying the reports are “factually incorrect.”

Dunford presented the current planned “residual force” as 200, saying that this hadn’t changed since February. The US announced 200 would stay on February 21, but on February 22 officially increased that number to 400.

It’s not clear from Dunford’s statement where the “incorrect” aspect of the new report, which came out of a Wall Street Journal, exists. That report suggested that the 1,000 figure was not yet finalized, but was being discussed. Dunford’s comments didn’t include any details on what is actually being discussed, but just that nothing was finalized.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I think the multiple troop numbers being given, are simply a way of creating confusion about how many US troops the US does have in Syria.

California Scientists Developing Cow-Free Dairy Milk From GMO Yeast and 3D Printed Milk Proteins

While most countries across the world continue to eschew virtually all food creations originating from the lab rather than the farmstead (especially in Europe, where nearly 20 countries banned GMOs in 2015), the United States is charging full-steam ahead toward a completely new type of food system.

This emerging system places scientists at the forefront of food production, not farmers.

In many cases, lab-made food companies start with admirable goals of ending or minimizing animal suffering, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and other similar missions.

But critics wonder why these novel foods are being rushed to market without long term safety testing at a time when increasing amounts of synthetic foods are being allowed into the U.S. supply.

TRANSITION TO CASHLESS SOCIETY COULD LEAD TO FINANCIAL EXCLUSION AND SYSTEM VULNERABILITY, STUDY WARNS

Ten years ago, six out of every ten transactions in the UK were done in cash. Now it’s just three in ten. And in fifteen years’ time, it could be as low as one in ten, reports the final edition of the Access to Cash Review. Commissioned as a response to the rapid decline in cash use in the UK and funded by LINK, the UK’s largest cash network, the review concludes that the UK is not nearly ready to go fully cashless, with an estimated 17% of the population – over 8 million adults – projected to struggle to cope if it did.
