‘Hail Satan’ Prayer at Alaska Government Meeting Sparks Outrage

A walkout occurred at an Alaska government meeting Tuesday after an official ended a prayer by uttering the words “Hail Satan,” local media reports.
The official, Iris Fontana — who also happens to be a member of the Satanic Temple — delivered an invocation ahead of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting Tuesday, sealing the prayer with “Hail Satan.”

“Let’s cast aside our differences, to use reason, logic, science and compassion to create solutions for the greater good of our community,” Fontana said. “It is done. Hail Satan. Thank you.”

Almost a dozen people walked out in protest, including Mayor Charlie Pierce. Additionally, a number of protesters stood outside, local media reports.

Technically, the satanic prayer was permissible due to pushes from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Alaska.

In the New York Times, Kenneth Chang reports that this week NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars detected high amounts of methane, a gas that is commonly a signature of life. From the NYT:

“Given this surprising result, we’ve reorganized the weekend to run a follow-up experiment,” Ashwin R. Vasavada, the project scientist for the mission, wrote to the science team in an email that was obtained by The Times.

The mission’s controllers on Earth sent new instructions to the rover on Friday to follow up on the readings, bumping previously planned science work. The results of these observations are expected back on the ground on Monday...

On Earth, microbes known as methanogens thrive in places lacking oxygen, such as rocks deep underground and the digestive tracts of animals, and they release methane as a waste product.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A major congratulations to Dr. Gilbert Levin, who detected life on Mars 43 years ago on the Viking Mission.

AMAZON GETS U.S. PATENT TO USE DELIVERY DRONES FOR SURVEILLANCE SERVICE Inc is exploring using drones not just to deliver packages but also to provide surveillance as a service to its customers, according to a patent granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The delivery drones can be used to record video of consented user’s property to gather data that can be analyzed to look out, say for example, a broken window, or a fire or if a garage door was left open during the day, the patent described.

According to the patent, the surveillance function of the drone can be limited through geo-fencing, a technology used to draw a virtual boundary around the property under surveillance. Any image or data that the drone captures outside the geo-fence would be obscured or removed.

The application for the patent was filed by the e-commerce giant in 2015 and granted on June 4.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What about people who do NOT want to to have their properties surveilled in such a way, and have therefore NOT given this consent?!?

I somehow, do not have a "warm and fuzzy feeling" about the use of these surveillance drones!!

Judge orders special prosecutor be appointed to look into Jussie Smollett controversy

A Cook County judge on Friday ordered the surprise appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the sudden dismissal of all charges against Jussie Smollett, saying the short-lived prosecution may have been legally invalid from the beginning.

Judge Michael Toomin ruled that State’s Attorney Kim Foxx had the right to withdraw herself from overseeing the prosecution of the onetime “Empire” actor but held no legal authority to delegate that responsibility to her top deputy.

With the deputy holding no real authority, the Smollett case made its way through the court system without a prosecutor at the helm, the veteran judge said.
