Israeli forces attack protesters in West Bank

Israeli forces have attacked Palestinian demonstrators protesting against the ongoing Israeli settlement building and the separation wall in the occupied territories.

Media reports say Israeli soldiers fired teargas and live ammunition to disperse the protesters in several West Bank towns on Friday.

Witnesses said dozens of Palestinians suffered temporary asphyxiation from teargas during the protest rallies.

What would Happen if the Int’l Criminal Court Indicted Israel’s Netanyahu?

If the International Criminal Court takes up Israeli government actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, it could well find specific officials guilty of breaches of the Rome Statute of 2002. Article 7 forbids “Crimes against Humanity,” which are systematically repeated war crimes. Among these offenses is murder, forcible deportation or transfer of members of a group, torture, persecution of Palestinians (an “identifiable group”) and “the crime of Apartheid.”

CAN YOU PICTURE A MAP OF THE MIDDLE EAST WITHOUT ISRAEL ON IT?

Collins Bartholomew, a map-publishing company that is a subsidiary of HarperCollins, said that including Israel in its “Collins Primary Geography Atlas For The Middle East” would have been “unacceptable” to their customers in the Gulf and that leaving Israel off the maps incorporated “local preferences.”

While Israel is not demarcated on the maps, the West Bank is clearly labeled.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I had originally assumed this was a simple mistake, due to Israel's small size relative to the scale of the map. But this admission that HarperCollins intentionally altered the maps to please certain customers calls into the question the validity of every map they produce.

Israeli settlers attack Palestinians south of Jenin

A group of Jewish settlers attacked at dawn Friday Palestinian vehicles traveling on Jenin-Nablus road near the junction of Jaba village south of Jenin.

Around 12 vehicles carrying settlers stormed today the evacuated settlement of Tarsleh and blocked Jenin-Nablus road under military protection.

The settlers spread amongst nearby olive trees and embarked on attacking and stoning the passing Palestinian cars in the presence of Israeli soldiers, eyewitnesses said.

With Israel ‘war crimes’ gambit, PA risks loss of US funding

In initiating a war crimes probe against Israel with the International Criminal Court, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas may fall afoul of US legislation that would mandate defunding the PA. The US funds the PA to the tune of some $400 million per year.

Even if Abbas’s ICC investigation gambit does not play out — and Palestine’s route ahead at the ICC is strewn with legal obstacles — it is viewed by many leaders of the incoming Republican-controlled Congress as the latest justification to reexamine the PA’s American funding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Should the US stop funding the PA, other, more local, Middle Eastern countries could well pick up the slack, like Qatar.

ANOTHER LETTER THE NEW YORK TIMES WOULD SURELY DEEM UNFIT TO PRINT

I started writing this as a Letter to the Editor, but my anger could not be conveyed in only 150 words, so I am posting this open letter instead:

Readers expect greater accuracy from New York Times columnists.

How dare Mr. Roger Cohen suggest that Gaza, a part of my homeland, is “nowhere!”

If Mr. Cohen is at a loss to know where Gaza lies, allow me to guide him. The Gaza Strip, as well as Gaza City, were both part and parcel of Historic Palestine, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. Following the colossal injustice that resulted in the displacement of more than half of the Palestinian people, and then the creation of what we know today as the state of Israel, and the subsequent military occupation of the remaining Palestinian lands of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the Gaza Strip become part and parcel of an Israeli-militarily-occupied territory. It is this military occupation under which many of my friends and colleagues were born and live to this day.

Palestinians To Join International Criminal Court

Turning up the pressure on Israel, the Palestinians announced Wednesday that they are joining the International Criminal Court to pursue war-crimes charges against the Jewish state — a risky, high-stakes move that brought threats of retaliation from Israel and criticism from the U.S.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas acted a day after suffering a defeat in the U.N. Security Council, which voted down a resolution setting a three-year deadline for the establishment of a Palestinian state on lands occupied by Israel.

"We want to complain. There's aggression against us, against our land. The Security Council disappointed us," Abbas said.

Turning to the international court at The Hague marks a major policy shift, transforming Abbas' relations with Israel from tense to openly hostile. The ultimate goal is to pressure Israel into withdrawing from the territories and agreeing to Palestinian statehood.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the countless killings of innocent Palestinians by the IDF are not "hostile" acts?!? Operation Protective Edge was not "hostile"?!? The brisk annexation of Palestinian land for Jewish only settlements is not "hostile"?!?

IF these acts are not "hostile", I cannot tell you what IS supposed to be hostile!

Palestine to Join International Criminal Court, Defying Israeli and US Warnings

“There is aggression practiced against our land and our country, and the Security Council has let us down — where shall we go?” Mr. Abbas said at his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah as he signed the Rome Statute, the founding charter of the court, and a number of other international conventions.

Comments on Palestine's UN Failure

Defeated by US pressure. Its veto power. Supporting virtually everything Israel wants. Two nations united against Palestinian liberation. Determined to prevent it.

Wanting Palestinians held hostage. Under permanent bondage. Controlling virtually all aspects of their lives.

Denying them fundamental rights. Collectively punishing them. Leaving them isolated on their own. Longstanding injustice continues.

'US an enemy': Palestinian official blasts Washington over UNSC statehood veto

Palestine will start an international campaign showcasing the US as “an enemy,” pushing Israeli extremists to carry on with their actions and supporting Israel in everything, Fatah central committee member Abbas Zaki said.

Zaki, also the former representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Lebanon, told RT Arabic that the latest developments in the UNSC were not a failure for Palestinian diplomacy.

“It’s just the persistent unwillingness of the US administration to give the Palestinian people its lawful right of self-determination. It’s a very dangerous precedent,” he said.

Fireworks in Ramallah, as Abbas signs treaty to join International Criminal Court

Fireworks are exploding throughout Ramallah in celebration of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s surprise move to sign the Rome Statute along with 21 other international treaties, one day after his draft resolution seeking to end Israel’s occupation through negotiations failed to pass the United Nations Security Council.

Abbas had held off in the past on acceding to the Rome Statute, which allows the Palestinian government to present charges against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC). The signing tonight was unexpected.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It was not unexpected. It was the obvious next step.

US 'Strongly Opposes' PA ICC Request

The United States said Wednesday it "strongly opposes" a request from the Palestinian Authority to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), fearing this will further delay peace talks with Israel.

"It would be counterproductive and would do nothing to further the aspirations of the Palestinian people for a sovereign and independent state," the State Department said. "It will badly damage the atmosphere with the very people with whom they ultimately need to make peace."

"As we've said before, the United States continues to strongly oppose actions -- by both parties -- that undermine trust and create doubts about their commitment to a negotiated peace," it continued. "Our position has not changed. Such actions only push the parties further
apart."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US is doing its level best to keep the criminal activities of the IDF and Israeli government against the Palestinians as quiet as possible; with the Palestinian Authority becoming a signatory to the ICC, that will be rendered impossible.

The level of embarrassment the US government will experience will be pretty uncomfortable, when neither they, nor Israel can dictate the narrative here.

DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH WAITING FOR THE UN TO GIVE PALESTINE STATEHOOD

The UN, after all, has had more than 60 years to give the Palestinians any semblance of justice, but to no avail. The reason behind this monumental moral failure is simple. The world order is not based on justice and morality. It is rather based on military might and political power.

Russia Slams UNSC failure to Act on Palestine; Vows to Continue

Russia has warned that the United Nations Security Council’s failure to approve a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state could plunge the Middle East into insecurity and violence.

“The inaction of the Security Council in this area dooms the situation to a dangerous status quo which we cannot accept. One chance for hope is not enough. We must continue,” Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said.

The Russian diplomat expressed regret over the UN’s rejection of the resolution, describing it as a “strategic mistake.”

Revealed: Gaza orphans Israel trip was government-backed PR stunt

The visit was the brainchild of an Israeli operative deeply involved in settlements in the occupied West Bank, working closely with the Israeli government.

It involved Palestinian counterparts in Israel with ties to the ruling Likud party and the Zionist political establishment.

It is unlikely that the non-governmental organization in Gaza that helped coordinate the visit was aware of these facts when it agreed to take part.

The draft resolution gathered only 8 votes in favour, so it was automatically defeated. The US however still used its veto power and voted against the resolution.

Egypt to begin expanding Gaza buffer zone next week

Egypt said Tuesday work will begin next week to double the width of a buffer zone being built along the border with the Gaza Strip to prevent militants infiltrating from the Palestinian enclave.

A 500-metre (546-yard) wide buffer zone is now being built along some 10 kilometres (six miles) of the border, with some 800 homes being demolished in the process.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Palestinian resolution fails at the Security Council, U.S. votes against ‘staged confrontation’ at the UN

The Palestinian leadership’s resolution to end Israel’s occupation through negotiations failed to pass the United Nations Security Council this evening. While Palestinian leaders had hoped to garner the nine votes needed to be approved by the 15-member council, only eight countries supported the measure. The United States and Australia voted against it while five others abstained.

“The Security Council has once again failed to uphold its charter duties to address theses crises and to meaningfully contribute to a peaceful and lasting solution in accordance with its own resolutions,” said Palestine’s representative to the United Nations Riyad Mansour.

UN Security Council set to vote on Palestinian statehood bid

22 Arab UN ambassadors decide to push forward and put the resolution to a vote, despite U.S. and British objections.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the US will veto.

But ...

Yet another veto by the US to serve Israel further undermines the US image of being an impartial arbiter in the Middle East, and that image is core to sustaining the current petro-dollar arrangement with those oil-producing nations, who might just react to a new US veto by deciding en masse to sell their oil for other currencies.

Palestinians to push ahead with UN resolution

The Palestinian leadership has presented changes to a UN draft resolution that could set a timeframe for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told US Secretary of State John Kerry he would press ahead with a resolution calling for a peace deal with Israel within a year with an "end to occupation" of Palestinian territories by late 2017, state news agency WAFA reported.

The revised resolution calls for occupied East Jerusalem to be the capital of Palestine, an end to Israeli settlement building and settling the issue of Palestinian prisoner releases.

Arab UN delegations meeting in New York on Monday endorsed the proposal.

Dina Kawar, Jordan's UN Ambassador and the sole Arab representative on the UN Security Council, said the revised text would be submitted to the council later on Monday.

Israeli digging causes collapse near Western Wall

Israeli excavations under the al-Aqsa Mosque have caused collapse just meters away from the Western Wall of East al-Quds (Jerusalem), Press TV reports.

The wall is located at the foot of the western side of Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary, one of the most important religious sites in the Israeli-occupied Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The collapse came about on Friday in an area in Silwan south of al-Aqsa where the tunnels dug by the Israelis start. Following the incident, the Israeli police sealed off the site and forbade anyone from approaching it.

407 Jewish settlers forced way into Al-Aqsa for Hanukkah

At least 407 Jewish settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex during this week's Hanukkah holidays, a Palestinian NGO said Thursday.

The Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage said that, from Sunday to Thursday, 407 Israelis – protected by Israeli police – had conducted individual and group tours inside the mosque complex.

Of these, 52 were young Israeli troops who entered the complex in military uniform as part of a so-called "guidance and exploration" program, the NGO said.

"Occupation forces harassed Muslim worshippers at the gates of the mosque complex, arresting 20 over the past week," it added.

It went on to say that detained worshippers had been subsequently released after being subject to monetary fines and barred from entering the Al-Aqsa complex for periods ranging from two weeks to one month.

Israeli officials could not be reached for comment on the issue.

NY Times says a Palestinian majority would ‘endanger Israel’s democratic ideals’

And: “a Palestinian majority” would not just endanger Israel’s Jewish character, but its “democratic ideals?” Isn’t that like saying democracy would endanger a democracy? Not when you’re talking about Arabs! Writes Donald Johnson: “Imagine them saying that about any other ethnic group in the world. Interpreted charitably, they might be saying that a one state solution might lead to ethnic strife between extremists on one or both sides, or something like that, but if so, they should spell it out. Their brains just shut down when writing on this subject.”

Anti-Zionism in the 21st Century

The essence of the Palestinian struggle is the battle against Zionism. It is a battle against its racism, against its murderous war crimes, against its insatiable territorial hunger, against its disdain for non-Jewish human rights, and against its devoted attempts to destroy Palestinian national identity. As voices of normalization are on the rise, and social media is invaded by paid pro-Zionist bloggers, there is an increased need for anti-Zionists to draw attention to the crimes committed by ‘Israel’, and to speak up against the ongoing media silence and the apologist activities of those misleadingly portraying themselves as ‘peace doves’. Boulder group backs ads against U.S. support for Israel 'war crimes'

It's unlikely that the buses bearing the controversial messages will be seen in Boulder County, but local activists are voicing their support for a round of ads that debuted in the Denver metro area last week decrying Israel's ongoing conflict with Palestinians.

The ads, which first appeared on the sides of seven RTD buses Dec. 17, read: "Israel's War Crimes, Your Tax Dollars at Work." They bear the image of a Palestinian woman weeping while sitting in a pile of rubble, along with the web address stopfundingapartheid.org.

The site is maintained by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign, a group dedicated to "breaking the information blockade" about war crimes it alleges the Israeli government has committed over the years against the Palestinian people. BBC’s Kafkaesque response to complaint over Gaza coverage

Last month, the BBC sent an email to the UK-based campaigning organization Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), which was almost comical in its arrogance.

It was a response to a complaint made by PSC in October that BBC online reports were referring to the Gaza ceasefire as holding, despite the fact that by the end of October, Israel had breached the ceasefire numerous times since it was signed on 26 August.

In fact, Israel has fired on Palestinians in Gaza almost on a daily basis.

In its initial complaint, PSC referred to the website of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), which documents incidents of ceasefire breaches. These breaches had been collated in an article published by Middle East Monitor (MEMO), which reported that there was more than one Israeli attack on Gaza every day in September. The MEMO article was also included in PSC’s submission.

Hebron elder fights back as Israeli soldiers seize 10-year-old boys

This video shows Israeli occupation forces violently arresting two young boys, allegedly for throwing stones, as adults try to protect the children.

Christian Peacemaker Teams, which released the video, says that it shows the arrests of Mohammed Nabil Taha and Akram Zayed al-Jamal, both aged ten, on 17 December.

The video comes in the same week that another group, Defence for Children International–Palestine, released new testimonies from Palestinian children subjected to torture and solitary confinement in Israeli military custody.

The boys were “visibly shaking and crying while the Israeli border police held them in custody for thirty minutes at Qitoun checkpoint 209 in Hebron,” Christian Peacemaker Teams, a civilian group that monitors life under Israeli military occupation in Hebron, says.

Israeli soldier seriously wounded in exchange of fire on Gaza border

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was seriously wounded on Wednesday when Palestinian snipers opened fire at troops guarding construction work at the security fence near the southern Gaza Strip.

The IDF opened tank and aircraft fire in response to the sniper shots, killing the commander of the Hamas Al-Qassam Brigades' observation unit, Taysr Asmiri. Several others were wounded. The Israeli army sources say that the sniper was affiliated with Hamas.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That is what Israel initially said about the rocket fired into an empty lot in Israel last week, only to be forced to admit that outside provateurs had been behind it. How lucky for Israel that snipers show up just in time to restart Israel's war against Gaza, which only a week ago Israel's defense minister announced was being planned!

Palestine, Israel and the News Media

On November 18 of this year, the news media was awash with the news of the killing of four rabbis at a synagogue in Jerusalem. This is headline news for CNN and the New York Times, the latter of which had the nerve to say this: “Witnesses and Israeli leaders were particularly horrified at the religious overtones of an attack on a synagogue….”

Where, one may naively ask, were these august news outlets during the past several weeks, as Israeli settlers, protected and even aided by Israeli soldiers, desecrated sacred mosques in Jerusalem? Where were the horrified reports of dead and bloodied Palestinians? What about the complete desecration of Muslim holy sites? Were no witnesses and Palestinian ‘leaders horrified at the religious overtones of an attack on a’ mosque?

Rabbis plan to build temple on Al-Aqsa ruins

In the clearest indication of the growing dangers threatening Al-Aqsa Mosque, in an opinion piece published on Saturday, Haaretz discussed a group of rabbis who met to discuss the scheme for the establishment of the Third Temple on the ruins of the mosque. The newspaper published a photograph of a number of rabbis and engineers studying a map of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In a piece written by Professor Ronnie Ellenblum entitled "Bells are ringing for the ultra-Orthodox and Secular" [hebrew], the paper discussed the future of Al-Aqsa Mosque which Jews refer to as the Temple Mount.

Although the paper did not identify the rabbis who appeared in the picture, one of them has been identified as Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, president of the Temple Institute, a religious authority that is considered the most enthusiastic about destroying Al-Aqsa Mosque and establishing a temple on its ruins.

Israel violates Gaza ceasefire nearly every day

After Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza on Friday, the BBC described the air strike on “a Hamas facility” as “the first such action since the declaration of a truce in August.”

The short BBC News item, essentially a repackaged Israeli army press statement, added that the strike was “in response” to a rocket fired earlier from Gaza.

The casual reader would understand this to mean that Israel has held its fire since the August ceasefire which ended the intensive bombing this summer that claimed more than 2,200 Palestinian lives.

However, the reality is that Israel has fired on Palestinians in Gaza nearly every day since the 26 August truce.

“Israel seems finally to have thrown in the towel. (Whether this would result in yet another proposal to revise the words to “Hatikvah” remains to be seen.) At first sight, this would seem to be the worst possible news, given the Prime Minister’s relentless insistence on the need for Palestinian recognition of Israel as a “Jewish state” and the stagnation of the peace talks. But others have underestimated him at their peril. An aide quipped, when life hands you an etrog, you build a sukkah.

RABBINICAL TAUNTING OF THE SEASON

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach taunted a crowd of human rights protesters in front of the seemingly closed and emptied flagship Leviev diamond store on Madison Avenue. Leviev’s companies have built thousands of Israeli settlement homes and have been accused of abusing and torturing Angolan diamond miners.

Boteach stood in front of the empty Leviev store and began shouting. “Israel,” “Down with Hamas,” “Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East,” “Down with the Palestinians.” He suddenly stopped and complained that he was being videotaped. Police told Boteach to leave as he was drowned out by chants of, “How fancy, how pretty, Leviev out of New York City.” Boteach was accompanied by a young man wearing a scarf for the notoriously racist Beitar Jerusalem football team. Boteach has expressed his support for Hebron’s notoriously violent and racist settlers.

Hamas arrests Gaza jihadis behind latest rocket attack: Israeli official

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said on Sunday that Hamas detained members of a global jihadi group in the Gaza Strip who fired a rocket into southern Israel over the weekend.

"It turns out that it's one of the global jihad organizations, one of those so-called rogue organizations," Ya'alon said.

Israel and Palestinian factions signed a ceasefire agreement on Aug. 26 after a deadly Israeli offensive on Gaza that left more than 2,100 — overwhelmingly civilians — dead.

The ceasefire deal stipulated an end to hostilities, and Israel agreed to ease its devastating blockade on the Strip and expand the fishing zone off Gaza’s coast.

However, Palestinians accuse Israeli forces of regular ceasefire violations, with near-daily reports that navy soldiers have fired at fishermen off the coast of the enclave, and occasional reports of Israeli troops shooting and injuring Palestinians near the border.

Israel won't accept "unilateral" recognition of Palestine: Netanyahu

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday, Dec 18 Israel would never accept the "unilateral" recognition of a Palestinian state, after a draft resolution calling for a final peace deal was submitted to the UN, according to Agence France-Presse.

In a statement from his office, Netanyahu accused Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas of "thinking he can threaten us by taking unilateral steps" over statehood.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Customs Union and Israel’s No-State Solution

Theoretically, a customs union carries mutual benefits to the member states. However, as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development noted in a 1988 report, between 1967 and 1988 the customs union between Israel and the OPT treated the two economies as dualisms that entrenched the status quo, which, at that time, had established the OPT as a reservoir of cheap labor and Israel as a production and export powerhouse.

Israeli official warns that another war against Gaza is looming

An Israeli official has warned that a new Israeli war on the Gaza Strip is coming soon. He stressed, however, that wars are only decided on by politicians, local media has reported.

"In the light of the current escalation, war with Gaza is just a matter of time," claimed the head of the Israeli settlement of Eshkol in the Western Negev, Hayim Yilin. The Israeli authorities claimed on Friday that a projectile launched from the south of the Gaza Strip landed in the illegal settlement. It is alleged to have been the third to be launched since the Israeli war on Gaza during the summer.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel Airstrike Hits Hamas Site In Gaza

Israel's military struck a Hamas site in the Gaza Strip early Saturday in its first airstrike on the Palestinian territory since this summer's war.

The Israeli military said the airstrike on what it called a "Hamas terror infrastructure site" in the southern Gaza Strip was in response to a rocket fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Friday. The rocket fire caused no injuries.

Palestinian residents reported hearing two explosions in the Khan Yunis region of Gaza, in an area that contains training sites for Palestinian militants. No injuries were immediately reported.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesman, said Israel's military "will not permit any attempt to undermine the security and jeopardize the well being of the civilians of Israel. The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible and accountable for today's attack against Israel."

Webmaster's Commentary:

This started yesterday, and appears to be open-ended on the part of the Israeli military.

They are most probably bombing schools and hospitals with great glee, even though there were absolutely no reports of injuries where these shells exploded.

I am fully expecting, with Obama off-site, and Americans generally preoccupied with Christmas and New Year's, that the IDF will continue bombing Gaza for as long as they believe they can get away with it.

The Israeli government has got to be made to understand that it cannot continue to wave the Holocaust in the face of the world, while practicing serial genocide against Gazan Palestinians, because this is precisely what is happening.

A few dead here...a few more maimed for live and wounded over there... and the Israeli government thinks, who notices?!?

To the Israeli government and Knesset; the world notices. The question is what the world is willing to do, and I think the will to demonstrate, tangibly, that this is totally unacceptable, is growing among the civilized countries of the world.

Palestinians criticize Canada for boycotting meeting on Israeli settlements

The top Palestinian diplomat in Canada says the Harper government should not have boycotted a United Nations conference this week that harshly criticized Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Said Hamad says Canada should have joined other countries at a conference in Geneva examining the Fourth Geneva Convention, which governs the rules of war and military occupation.

Some 126 countries of the 196 international parties to the convention adopted a resolution Wednesday saying Israel’s construction of settlements does not conform to its international legal obligations as an occupying power.

Along with Israel and the U.S., Canada boycotted the conference, another example of unwavering Conservative support of Israel — a position that has exposed deep differences with the majority of the United Nations.
