Catastrophe at Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant?

The first thing most people don’t realize is that geiger counters are location sensitive. They are calibrated against the background radiation for a specific location. This means that if you take a geiger counter and move just a mile away, the background radiation itself could be different and the measurement inaccurate. Known background radiation is the Zero point on a calibrated geiger counter.

Second and as important is that all sensitive measurement tools need to be calibrated and certified to be useful. Sensitive tools go out of calibration by themselves over time. After Fukushima, a new normal needs to be considered.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Poroshenko's government needs to come as clean as humanly possible about the facts on the ground here; lives are at stake, not only those of Ukrainians, but also those of Europeans.

Expert help needs to be asked for, and granted, in dealing with the realities here, to make sure that this is not a huge catastrophe in the making.

Russia Is Building a Train That Will Zip From Moscow to Beijing In Just 48 Hours

Russia plans to build a new high speed railway, with trains that would speed from Moscow to Beijing in just 48 hours. At the moment, it takes about seven days to commute between the two cities and the route requires changes. According to Romanian website Glasul, the Kremlin has awarded the project to China Railway High-speed (CRH), a subsidiary of the state-controlled China Railway (CR), which is working in a joint-venture with the local firm Uralvagonzavod. CR is famous in the train industry for operating the world's only magnetic levitation train in an urban area, the Shangai monorail.

Oliver Stone's New Movie: "Ukraine: The CIA Coup" Coming To A Theater Near You

US filmmaker Oliver Stone is currently engaged in production of a documentary about Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who fled the country following the February coup last year. As Sputnik reports, Stone's Facebook page notes, "[I] Interviewed Viktor Yanukovych 4 hours in Moscow for new English language documentary produced by Ukrainians. He [Yanukovych] was the legitimate President of Ukraine until he suddenly wasn't on February 22 of this year." The outspoken director then added, "the truth is not being aired in the West... many believe foreign elements were introduced by pro-Western factions with CIA fingerprints on it."

USA instructs Russian Central Bank how to strangle Russian economy

"In other words, Russia is not even a ruble country de jure. Russia is a dollar country. The Russian ruble takes a small share in the country. The whole segment of investment is based on dollars and euros. The Constitution protects that, and the Central Bank of the country should keep the rate. Now, we have the situation when the Central Bank does not abide by the Constitution, because it raised the key rate and reduced the ruble rate. From the point of view of the Constitution, the Central Bank is obliged to keep the rate. The Central Bank violated the Constitution and Putin's numerous instructions, but it was an absolutely logical move. The charter of the Central Bank does not contain a word about the Russian economy. It should not support the Russian economy. The law says that the Central Bank is governed by international agreements. The bank signs agreements that the Ministry of Justice does not even register. The administration of the Russian Central Bank is based outside Russia.

Russia Says Ukrainian Nazis Pay Blackwater for Training

The Russian Government’s Tass ‘news’ agency is alleging that “The US private military company Academi (formerly known as Blackwater) … has confirmed to the Kiev authorities its readiness to start training an experimental battalion of 550 men as of January at the request of Ukraine’s General Staff,” according to an unnamed source, which source is probably one of the few remaining anti-nazi bureaucrats still remaining in the Ukrainian Government. The reported price of this Blackwater (a.k.a. “Xe,” a.k.a. “Academi”) training contract is $3.5 million.

Iran denies ‘tentative uranium agreement’ with US

Washington and Tehran came a step closer to agreeing on shipping part of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile to Russia, AP reported on Friday, citing diplomatic sources. However, Iran denied that any such agreement took place.

According to two diplomatic sources who spoke to the Associated Press, the December round of nuclear talks produced a “catalogue of areas of potential accord”, while outlining differing approaches to remaining stick points.

One of the breakthroughs, sources say, comes as Iran allegedly “tentatively agreed” to transport a large portion of its uranium stockpile to Russia for conversion into reactor fuel.

However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has denied reports that it has agreed with the US on the list of nuclear materials to be delivered to Russia. On Friday, Iran's foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said "no agreement on any nuclear topic" had taken place.

Guest Post: 2014 - A Russian Viewpoint

By any measure 2014 has been a truly historic year which saw huge, I would say, even tectonic developments. This year ends in very high instability, and the future looks hard to guess. I don't think that anybody can confidently predict what might happen next year. So what I propose to do today is something far more modest. I want to look into some of the key events of 2014 and think of them as vectors with a specific direction and magnitude. I want to look in which direction a number of key actors (countries) "moved" this year and with what degree of intensity. Then I want to see whether it is likely that they will change course or determination. Then adding up all the "vectors" of these key actors (countries) I want to make a calculation and see what resulting vector we will obtain for the next year.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a very long post, but well worth the read.

The bottom line here is that both Russia and the US/NATO military and political leaders are preparing for war over the rebellious provinces of Eastern Ukraine.

The big question is just how such a war will play out, with US/NATO fighting with the Ukrainian military, and Russia fighting to protect those Eastern rebellious provinces.

NATO aims new advanced nuclear strike force at Russia China

Under the public radar , NATO is modernising its tactical nuclear arsenal. Moscow's latest tests of intercontinental missiles and its parading of nuclear capable strategic bombers have rightly prompted international concern. In December 2014, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov implied that Russia might be moving nuclear weapons to Crimea. From violations of airspace to near mid- air collisions, the number of incidents between Russia and NATO has soared dramatically, increasing the danger of an unintended escalation. Yet, it is rarely mentioned that NATO, too, is back in the game of nuclear deterrence.

‘CIA fingerprints’ all over Kiev massacre – Oliver Stone

The armed coup in Kiev is painfully similar to CIA operations to oust unwanted foreign leaders in Iran, Chile and Venezuela, said US filmmaker Oliver Stone after interviewing Ukraine’s ousted president for a documentary.

Stone spent four hours in Moscow talking to Viktor Yanukovich, who was deposed from power during the February 2014 coup, the filmmaker wrote on his Facebook page.

“Details to follow in the documentary, but it seems clear that the so-called ‘shooters’ who killed 14 police men, wounded some 85, and killed 45 protesting civilians, were outside third party agitators,” he said. “Many witnesses, including Yanukovych and police officials, believe these foreign elements were introduced by pro-Western factions – with CIA fingerprints on it.”

Maduro blames plunging oil prices on U.S. 'war' vs Russia, Venezuela

Venezuela's petroleum export price has plunged by half during the second half of 2014 to $48, President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday in denouncing a U.S.-led "war" against Russia and his nation in the global oil market

The South American OPEC nation's crude trades at a discount to the U.S. and Brent benchmarks because of its higher content of heavy oil.

Average monthly prices for oil, a product that accounts for 96 percent of Venezuela's hard currency revenue, have dropped steadily since July, when it was at $96.14 per barrel.

Venezuela enjoyed average prices of $103.42 per barrel in 2012 and $98.08 in 2013.

Giving the latest figure for Monday, Maduro repeated his socialist government's accusations that the plunge in oil was a U.S.-planned conspiracy primarily intended to harm Russia.

The Outlook for the New Year. The Insanity of Nuclear War against Russia

Today the Russian government no longer has any illusion that Europe is capable of an independent foreign policy. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated publicly that Russia has learned that diplomacy with Europe is pointless, because European politicians represent Washington’s interest, not Europe’s. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently acknowledged that Europe’s Captive Nation status has made it clear to Russia that Russian goodwill gestures are unable to produce diplomatic results.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As an American by both birth and inclination, I love my country very much; I also understand that the Constitution and Bill of Rights ARE the original "Contract With America."

Having said that, however, unfortunately, just because an action is the most pig-headedly, ham-fistedly wrong thing the US government could do, is absolutely no guarantee that it won't do it.

Right now, the US government is attempting to destroy Russia economically, with sanctions, as prelude to a possible "regime change" in Moscow. Failing this, the US government will come to some kind of trumped up charge, coupled with a false flag, for which to blame Russia (perhaps in the Ukraine), and this country will be off and running to a shooting war against Russia.

I would very strongly caution those precious few adults in the bowels of power in DC that this is a very, very bad idea. And I say this because right now, the US military doesn't have the troop strength, the money, or the manufacturing to guarantee a positive outcome in a conventional war against Russia; and that is what makes the military option so scarily dangerous.

Yes, this government has spent a staggering amount of money on its weaponry; but spending money does not always guarantee the kinds of outcomes you want, and the debacle which is the current F-35 comes very much to mind here.

Russia, on the other hand, has been spending its money more intelligently, and does have certain tactical advantages right now over the US military.

So to all the war hawks cheerleading for such a war: please remember that the unexpected outcomes may be both horrific... and irreversible.

Russia, Japan likely to cooperate in creating Eurasian Economic Corridor

Russia and Japan have perfect chances to take their cooperation in eastern Siberia and the Far East to a new level in 2015 if they set up the so-called Eurasian corridor, MP Yukio Hatoyama, an important figure in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said in an interview with TASS on Tuesday.

“This concept is very topical in spite of all the current difficulties,” said Hatoyama who has more than once occupied important governmental positions throughout his political career.

He is president of the Japan-Russia Society, which unites the activists of different political forces, as well as large and medium-sized businesses.

Ukraine in ‘full-blown financial crisis’ – National Bank head

Ukraine's GDP shrank by 7.5 percent from January till November 2014, as foreign exchange reserves fell to their lowest level since 2009, and inflation jumped to 21 percent by November, admits the head of the Ukraine's National Bank, Valeriya Gontareva.

The country's foreign exchange reserves shrank to $9.9 billion, as Kiev gave Naftogaz an estimated $8.6 billion to buy gas and settle state guaranteed Eurobonds. $3.1 billion went to settle the debt with Russia's Gazprom, Gontareva explained.

Economic Terrorism Against Russia Intensifies

Jeff Nielson: The Russian ruble fell a further 7% Monday. What is the “reason” cited in the Corporate media for this latest, further plunge in its “value” (i.e. exchange rate)? An “economic report” which shows that Russia’s economy is shrinking. Here we see the pattern of the economic terrorism perpetrated by the One Bank exposed.

In 2010; the One Bank decided to destroy the economy of Greece. It did so for several reasons. It wanted to “make an example” of Greece for all the other European governments to see. This was deemed essential when (tiny) Iceland successfully broke-free of the control of this crime syndicate after the Crash of ‘08, and reclaimed its own sovereignty. It was not about to allow other European governments to follow that example, and begin to assert their own independence.

Russia says to supply coal, electricity to Ukraine

Russia has agreed on a new deal to supply coal and electricity to Ukraine, which is struggling with a lack of raw fuel for power plants due to a separatist conflict in the industrial east, Russian officials said on Saturday.

Ukraine turns off reactor at its most powerful nuclear plant after 'accident'

Ukraine shut down one of the six reactors in its most powerful nuclear power plant today – for the second time in a month – because of an apparent electrical malfunction.

The Zaporizhia nuclear plant’s website insisted that radiation levels in the area remained normal after the sixth reactor was “disconnected from the grid by the generator’s internal defence mechanism”.

An official statement said the plant was “operating at 40 per cent power… The reasons for the outage are being investigated”.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I'd hazard a guess here, and that would be, in a country both corrupt and horribly broke, needed maintenance protocols have not been observed, because they were "too costly"

Afghanistan against US plans to transfer military gear to Ukraine - Kabul official

Kabul is against Washington's alleged decision to transfer weapons and machinery left from its military mission in Afghanistan to Ukraine, an Afghan presidential administration official told TASS. The issue will be discussed with Obama, he added.

American specialists in Afghanistan are currently preparing US army MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles to be transferred to Ukraine, according to the information obtained by the Afghan presidential administration. The US combat mission command refuses to discuss the issue with Kabul, saying the White House is in charge, a representative of Ashraf Ghani’s administration told the agency.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF in fact this report is true, it is a terrible harbinger of what is in store for Eastern Ukraine next year.

The question which must be asked, now, is when this equipment will be transported from Afghanistan to Ukraine. Afghanistan's Ghani will be in Washington for talks about the equipment and US troop strength some time early next year.

Perhaps the quid pro quo here will be the US moving this equipment out of the country in exchange for a much more enhanced US troop strength in Afghanistan, larger by far than the number the US government has already stated.

But were I a betting person, I would not bet that this equipment move will not be delayed much past the State of the Union address, to enable Obama to talk about the degree to which the US government is willing to assist Ukraine against the breakaway Eastern Ukrainian republics, and mention US troops and equipment already there as a fait accompli. If the equipment is moved by air, it is a matter of hours to get it to Ukraine; if by rail or truck, just a matter of days.

Ukraine cuts off Crimea’s power, transport services

Ukraine has cut off electricity as well as bus and train services to the Crimea Peninsula, which integrated into the Russian Federation in a referendum earlier this year.

On Friday, Kiev stopped providing electricity to Crimea, arguing that Ukraine has its own electricity shortages since the pro-Russia forces operating in the country’s east have blocked coal shipments to its power plants.

On the same day, Ukraine also suspended train and rail services to Crimea over what it described as security concerns.

Ukraine’s Government Is Starving Residents of the Breakaway Region

Amnesty International has found that “the already desperate situation in eastern Ukraine is being made even worse by” so-called ‘volunteer’ or mercenary forces for the Ukrainian Government, which are blocking the supply of food to residents in that region, and trying to starve them to death.

Thus, “The region is facing a humanitarian disaster with many already at risk of starvation,” said Denis Krivosheev, acting Director of Europe and Central Asia for Amnesty International, on Wed., December 24th.

Amnesty International reports that, “Over half of the population in these areas are now entirely dependent on food aid.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is absolutely certifiably criminal, on the part of the Ukrainian government.

The Bear Squeezes Back: Russian Ruble Rises against the Dollar

Sanctions introduced by the West against Russia are a form of hot economic warfare. But the attack on the ruble resulted in a competitive currency devaluation for Russia, limiting its ability to import from the West (saving foreign currency), and protecting the value of its declining volume of exports by increasing the number of dollars it receives for each devalued ruble.

As Michael Hudson has explained, Putin has responded to the U.S.-led sanctions movement by diversifying oil and gas exports towards China and Turkey, and signing sales agreements in rubles or currencies other than the U.S. dollar. By abandoning the U.S. dollar as its trading currency, and accepting payments in Chinese yuan, for instance, Putin is signalling his desire to break the stranglehold the U.S. currency has enjoyed over oil and gas trade, and within the world economy.

On December 22, China announced its willingness to support the ruble through currency swaps from its $4-trillion reserves.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It painfully clearly appears that the Obama Administration has again, collectively, shot itself in the foot economically, because of its consistent, to the point of pathological, inability to think anything through to its logical conclusion.

Russia to counteract NATO's boosted presence in Black Sea – envoy

Moscow is being forced to come up with countermeasures in response to NATO's increased presence in the Black Sea, Russia’s envoy to the alliance said following an announcement on the arrival of another US warship in the area.

“Unfortunately, the Black Sea is becoming a place where non-regional powers have a permanent presence. What they are doing there is unclear,” Aleksandr Grushko said.

“Of course, we will take the necessary countermeasures,” he continued.

Grushko also criticized the North Atlantic Alliance for stationing high alert forces near Russia's borders by holding frequent military drills with counties including Poland and the Baltic states.

READ MORE: Pentagon confirms military buildup along Russian borders for ‘peace and stability’

Russia’s new military doctrine, adopted on December 26, stresses that the country’s army remains a defensive tool, but lists NATO's military buildup and the United States' Prompt Global Strike concept as main security threats.

Webmaster's Commentary:

NATO'S continued provocation of Russia appears to be a deliberate series of events, engineered to get Russia to react militarily, then blame Russia for its "aggression", and start a war with Russia.

I would like to politely and calmly point out to those precious few adults in the bowels of power in DC that neither NATO nor the US military has the troop strength, the money, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to a conventional war against Russia, and that is what makes the military scenario so scarily dangerous.

And if you want any kind of a picture of how NATO will most likely perform military, just please look at the epic fail it has helped create in its partnership with the US in Afghanistan.

There is absolutely zero military metric one can use to possibly characterize this slo-mo bloodbath as a "victory" or success of any kind. The only thing which has "increased", except the body count of Afghanis, US and NATO military personnel, is the incredible increase of opium production, and THAT, since the beginning of the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, has SKYROCKETED.

So folks, before you swallow the Koolaid and get all gung ho about the US and NATO whupping Russia's backside, please do some due dilligence about the absolute disaster the occupation of Afghanistan has been.

Since there is a proven NATO "track record" here, if you will, you cannot logically expect any better an outcome against Russia.

NPR Propagandizes Against Putin, for Regime-Change in Russia

On Friday, December 26th, National Public Radio aired two superbly done pieces of anti-Russia propaganda, which could as well have been written by the U.S. CIA, or by Voice of America, it was so skillfully deceiving.

One of these propaganda-pieces, on “Morning Edition,” presented Eleanor Beardsley alleging that the anti-immigrant political parties in Britain and France are anti-U.S. and pro-Russian because they are supposedly all “far right”; and the other piece, on “All Things Considered,” presented Corey Flintoff alleging that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin “seized Crimea” (as if he hadn’t actually rescued it) and thereby caused U.S. President Barack Obama and the EU to respond with economic sanctions as punishment for the ‘seizure” (actually, as we’ll show, rescue).

Webmaster's Commentary:

NPR is simply another tool of government propaganda; I simply won't watch it anymore, because its alleged "news" is no better than the intellectual slop offered up by the privately sponsored competing presstitute stations.

Why the Secrecy on the Mh17 Investigation

The Russians disclosed, inter alia, their radar and satellite data. These data showed that MH17 had been diverted from its scheduled route so that it flew directly over the war zone in eastern Ukraine. They asked for an explanation but one has never been forthcoming. These data also showed that MH17 had been shadowed during its last minutes by two SU25 fighter jets, a model flown by the Ukrainian air force. Again the Russians asked why this had happened.

The main response was a claim that the SU25 could not fly above 10,000 metres. Not only is this untrue, as an examination of military resources readily demonstrates, but the Wikipedia entry on the SU25 had been altered days before the shoot down to claim that the SU25’s operating ceiling was only 7000 metres. Again the western media ignored this obvious alarm bell.

China to Start Payments With Russia in National Currencies on December 29

The China Foreign Exchange Trade System has announced that since December 29, China, Russia, Malaysia and New Zealand will start the usage of national currencies in mutual transactions. Beijing hopes to make the yuan an alternative to the US dollar in global trade.

Earlier in December, China's Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng claimed that China could increase the usage of yuan in trade with Russia amid the ruble's depreciation, which falls in line with China's intention to increase the usage of national currencies in international payments in order to weaken the US dollar's dominance in global finance and promote the yuan as an alternative.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Notice that recently on the non-news presstitute TV shows, North Korea has been increasingly demonized by the US.

Because China has a defense pact with North Korea ( the Sino-North Korean Mutual Aid and Cooperation Friendship Treaty, which lasts through 2021), a US war against North Korea would be a back door to a war with China, to prevent the assent of the yuan in the world economy.

MH17 – Airfield Witness, A Polygraph, Ukrainian Pilot and his Missing Missiles

According to his account, the witness personally saw the plane piloted by [Ukrainian military pilot with surname] Voloshin armed with R-60 air-to-air missiles, and added there was no need for such weapons during regular air missions of the Ukrainian Air Forces because the rebel forces had no military aircraft.

This version is consistent with witness accounts on the ground.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As it happens, Russian President Vladimir Putin was flying through the same area on that very day, returning home from a six day visit to Cuba and South America. Putin's Presidential jet, not as grand as Air Force One, is based on the Ilyushin 96. The IL-96 is a passenger jet, and is painted with a similar color scheme to the Malaysian 777. At a distance, they could easily have been confused for one another!

So Kiev wanted to murder Putin, to throw the Russian government into turmoil while Kiev reconquered the east (and possibly Crimea), but botched the operation, shooting down MH17 instead, then tried to drop the blame on Russia.

Ukrainian Junta Gives Absolute Power To Permanent War Body

The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday approved a bill granting more powers to the country’s top security body — the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), said the legislature’s press service.

The bill, which gives the NSDC the right to make decisions independently in emergencies without approval from the head of state or government, was passed with 253 votes in favor.

According to the new law, the NSDC, which previously supervised only the Defense Ministry and the armed forces, now acquires the right to partially control law enforcement, anti-corruption and executive agencies.

Besides, the NSDC secretary is entitled to declare martial law or a state of emergency in the country should a threat to national security arise.

Russia Says Ukraine's NATO Ambitions Are Dangerous For Europe

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Ukraine's pursuit of NATO membership posed a danger to European security and that the West was using Kiev's bid to join the Atlantic alliance as a way to fuel confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.

The Kiev parliament's renunciation of Ukraine's neutral status this week as a step towards joining NATO has outraged Moscow and deepened the worst confrontation between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War.

The witness, who was not named, worked at an airfield in the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk where he claimed to have seen a warplane take off on July 17 with air-to-air missiles and return without them.

An Investigative Committee statement said the testimony of the man "is important proof that Ukrainian military was implicated in the crash of the Boeing-777".

Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over territory in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists, who have been fighting Kiev forces since April.

Ukraine and the West accused Russia of supplying the rebels with a surface-to-air missile launcher, but Russia has issued several opposing theories, one of which involves a Ukrainian military jet allegedly seen next to the passenger jet.

Witness account of Ukraine MH17 takedown confirmed by lie detector – investigators

Russia’s Investigative Committee has confirmed the claims by a Ukrainian, who said he witnessed the deployment of a Ukrainian warplane armed with air-to-air missiles on the day the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down.

The interview was conducted on Tuesday, spokesman for the committee Vladimir Markin told the media on Wednesday.

This followed a report in a Russian newspaper, in which the Ukrainian citizen, who preferred to remain anonymous, voiced his allegations.

The investigators used a polygraph during the interview, which showed no evidence of the witness lying, he added.

Webmaster's Commentary:

From the start, there never was a reason for either the eastern Ukrainians or the Russians to shoot down a civilian passenger jet. The official story never made any sense at all.

MH17 witness emerges, claims Ukrainian jet brought down Boeing

Webmaster's Commentary:

BUMP TO THE TOP

This story suggests that the Ukrainian pilot, Captain Voloshin, shot down MH17 via mis-identification with a real target. So, with the eastern Ukrainians lacking any real air force, what target was Captain Voloshin searching for that would look like a Boeing passenger jet?

Russia Blames NATO For Ukraine Dropping Nonaligned Status

NATO members pushed Ukraine toward dropping its nonaligned status, Russia claimed Wednesday, and also criticized the alliance for expanding its military presence near Russian borders.

Ukraine's parliament abandoned the nonaligned position Tuesday, possibly paving the way for a bid to join NATO, in defiance of Russia's protests.

Moscow strongly protested the Ukrainian parliament's move. Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Wednesday that unidentified NATO members had pushed Ukraine to make the move in a bid to turn it into a "forward line for confronting Russia."

"Under the slogan of a 'Russian threat,' NATO is expanding its military potential in the Baltics, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania," Antonov said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, if you don't believe that this could escalate into a shooting war between NATO aligned with the West (read: the US) against Russia, you had very much better think again.

It is very clear, between the sanctions against it, the deliberately low pricing for oil, which is wrecking Russia's economy, and a potential downgrade of its financial worthiness, courtesy of Standard & Poor's, that the US is doing everything in its power to effect regime change in Russia.

Putin is too smart to let THAT happen.

But at the very top levels of leadership, the US and NATO are two reckless, hubristic organizations with a penchant for making very bad decisions which are not thought all the way to their logical conclusions.

And if you do not believe me, just take a look at the NATO/US "partnership" in Afghanistan, now 13 years old.Can someone possily explain to me how the current quagmire in Afghanistan is a "victory" for the US or NATO?!?

There is no military metric by which anyone in their right mind can claim this to be a "victory" for either the US or NATO.

The only bloody thing which has "improved" has been the massive boom in opium poppy production, but that is it.

Hell, it's never their kids who will wind up getting killed or maimed for life, ultimately for private profit; it is always other people's kids (your families, our families, etc.).

And the reason the US went into Afghanistan militarily was that the "leadership" in this country thought that the prices for pipeline rights being asked by the Taliban were "too high", and their regime "too unstable". As reported at theguardian.com in June 2003:

Start with father Bush. The former president and ex-CIA director is not unemployed these days. He's been globetrotting as a member of Washington's Carlyle Group, a $12 billion private equity firm which employs a motorcade of former ranking Republicans, including Frank Carlucci, Jim Baker and Richard Darman. George Bush senior and colleagues open doors overseas for The Carlyle Group's "access capitalists." Bush specializes in Asia and has been in and out of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (countries that revere him thanks to the Gulf War) often on business since his presidency. Baker, the pin-striped midwife of 'Election 2000' was working his network in the 'stans' before the ink was dry on Clinton's first inaugural address. The Bin Laden family (presumably the friendly wing) is also invested in Carlyle. Carlyle's portfolio is heavy in defense and telecommunications firms, although it has other holdings including food and bottling companies. The Carlyle connection means that George Bush Senior is on the payroll from private interests that have defense business before the government, while his son is president. Hmmm. As Charles Lewis of the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity, has put it, "in a really peculiar way, George W. Bush could, some day, benefit financially from his own administration's decisions, through his father's investments. And that to me is a jaw-dropper." Why can we assume that global businessmen like Bush Senior and Jim Baker care about who runs Afghanistan and NOT just because it's home base for lethal anti-Americans? Because it also happens to be situated in the middle of that perennial vital national interest -- a region with abundant oil. By 2050, Central Asia will account for more than 80 percent of our oil. On September 10, an industry publication, Oil and Gas Journal, reported that Central Asia represents one of the world's last great frontiers for geological survey and analysis, "offering opportunities for investment in the discovery, production, transportation, and refining of enormous quantities of oil and gas resources." It's assumed we need unimpeded access in the 'stans' for our geologists, construction workers and pipelines if we are going to realize the conservation-free, fossil-fueled future outlined recently by Vice President Cheney. A number of pipeline projects to carry Central Asia's resources west are already under way or have been proposed. They would go through Russia, through the Caucasus or via Turkey and Iran. Each route will be within easy reach of the Taliban's thugs and could be made much safer by an American vanquishment of Muslim terrorism. There's also lots of oil beneath the turf of our politically precarious newest best friend, Pakistan. "Massive untapped gas reserves are believed to be lying beneath Pakistan's remotest deserts, but they are being held hostage by armed tribal groups demanding a better deal from the central government," reported Agence France Presse just days before September 11.

This is why our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers have died, and continue to die and be maimed for life in Afghanistan; it is about who controls the flow of oil through the region, and in what financial denominations.

This is not about our "freedoms or liberties" or really what fragments of those which may yet remain, after the evisceration of the Constitution and Bill of Rights by the Homeland Security Act; the Patriot Act, and the NDAA: this is about potential private profit, period, end of discussion.

This current escalation of hostilities, both economic and military, against Russia demonstrates to me that the US and NATO are prepared to go to war against it, to destroy its economy, and destroy Russia militarily.

However, there is one big, ugly factor which generally goes unstated, again reflecting the illogical, magical, and hubristic thinking of US and NATO leadership: the US and NATO do not have the troop strength, the manufacturing, or the money to insure a successful outcome to a conventional war against Russia; and that is why the military scenario here remains so scarily dangerous.

It was the EU that provoked the Ukrainian shambles, not Vladimir Putin

Quite one of the oddest and most frightening stories of the year has been the ludicrous and persistent misrepresentation in the West of the reason for the tragic shambles unfolding over Russia and Ukraine.

This has been presented as wholly the fault of the Russian “dictator” Vladimir Putin, compared by Hillary Clinton and the Prince of Wales to Hitler, for his “annexing” of Crimea and for fomenting the armed uprising in eastern Ukraine. Almost entirely blotted out has been the key part played in triggering this crisis by the remorseless urge of the EU to draw the cradle of Russian identity into its own empire.

S&P’s Russia Junk Warning Shows Ruble Rebound Comes Late

For all of the progress Russia has made over the past week in stabilizing the ruble and quelling its financial crisis, Standard & Poor’s delivered a reminder of just how precarious the situation remains.

S&P said it’s considering cutting Russia’s credit-rating to junk, or below investment grade, for the first time in a decade as the looming recession spurs concern that the nation’s banks will face mounting bad loans. Hours before S&P released its statement yesterday, lawmakers sought to address that very concern, pushing through legislation that will allow President Vladimir Putin’s government to bail out struggling lenders.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have to wonder how much of the timing of this threat was purely economic; and how much is political, given the current strain in relations the US has engineered since Crimea chose, by referendum, to join the Russian Federation after the Ukrainian putsch.

Pepe Escobar On Blowback After Blowback For The "Empire Of Chaos"

At present, the choice between the two available models on the planet seems stark indeed: Eurasian integration or a spreading empire of chaos.

At the same moment that China is proposing a new Eurasian integration, Washington has opted for an “empire of chaos,” a dysfunctional global system now breeding mayhem and blowback across the Greater Middle East into Africa and even to the peripheries of Europe.

Don’t rule out a change in the dynamics of the situation, however. In the long run, it seems to be in the cards. One day, Germany may lead parts of Europe away from NATO’s “logic,” since German business leaders and industrialists have an eye on their potentially lucrative commercial future in a new Eurasia. Strange as it might seem amid today’s war of words over Ukraine, the endgame could still prove to involve a Berlin-Moscow-Beijing alliance.

Another MH17 Cover-Up: Hiding a Key Autopsy

Decisive evidence as to how the July 17th shooting-down of the MH17 Malaysian airliner occurred is being hidden by the four-nation team that’s doing the official ‘investigation’ into the plane-downing incident.

This decisive evidence is the coroner’s report on the corpse of the airliner’s pilot. If the pilot was killed by bullets, then the standard ‘explanation’ of the downing (that the plane was downed by a ground-fired missile) isn’t just false, it’s an outright hoax. So: where’s the pilot’s autopsy?

This investigation is important because stringent economic sanctions against Russia were instituted immediately after the downing; these sanctions were based upon never-substantiated charges from the Ukrainian Government, and from its sponsor the U.S. Government, alleging that the plane had been downed by rebels who were supported by Russia. (The “Buk” missile launcher charged by Ukraine as the cause was actually manned by Ukraine’s soldiers.)

Webmaster's Commentary:

And this little gem, reported yesterday at pravda.ru, just about sums it up with regard to the dark, despotic turn of events in Ukraine. Poroshenko has proven himself just another US-sponsored tin pot dictator.

The media that express criticism of Ukrainian President Poroshenko will be automatically equated to “enemies of Ukraine” or “FSB agents,” with all ensuing consequences. Speaking on December 9 at the Verkhovna Rada, the head of the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko faction, Yuriy Lutsenko, said that intelligence agencies of Ukraine should deal with those mass media outlets that criticize the sitting Ukrainian authorities. “Neo-imperialists take efforts to internally disorganize the Ukrainian state. We have recently seen that the deadly germs of separatism that have brought a third of the Ukrainian Donbass to a state of catastrophe start growing in other areas,” said Lutsenko. He demanded the security forces of Ukraine should confront “anti-state elements and spies, as well as the fifth column of the Kremlin.” “We also demand the Bacchanalia of anti-Ukrainian separatism should be stopped in certain media outlets that are fed from abroad and are freely distributed in Ukraine in millions of copies,” said the MP. Noteworthy, Ukraine works to set up the “Ministry of Truth” that will deal with dissent of citizens. The new department is said to be headed by Poroshenko’s relative, Yuri Stets.

Head of Stratfor, ‘Private CIA,’ Says Overthrow of Yanukovych Was ‘The Most Blatant Coup in History’

In a December 19th interview in the Russian magazine Kommersant, George Friedman, who is the Founder and CEO of Stratfor, the ‘Shadow CIA’ firm, says of the overthrow of Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych that occurred on February 22nd of 2014: “It really was the most blatant coup in history.” Perhaps he is saying this because of the videos that were uploaded to the Web which showed it to be so, but this statement by him contradicts the description that is asserted by the U.S. White House and the European Union, and the Western press, which description is that Yanukovych’s overthrow was instead just the result of the U.S. Government’s $5+ billion expense since 1991 to establish ‘democracy’ in Ukraine.

So the Russians don’t even have to default. They can just say, ‘We’re not going to pay this year. We will do it later. We’ll do it when the ruble stabilizes.’ (Laughter).

Earlier this evening China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange's (SAFE) Wang Yungui noted "the impact of the Russian Ruble depreciation was unclear yet, and, as Bloomberg reported, "SAFE is closely watching Ruble's depreciation and encouraging companies to hedge Ruble risks." His comments also echoed the ongoing FX reform agenda aimed at increasing Yuan flexibility which The South China Morning Post then hinted in a story entitled "Russia may seek China help to deal with crisis," which which noted that Russia could fall back on its 150 billion yuan ($24 billion) currency swap agreement with China if the ruble continues to plunge, that was signed in October. Furthermore, two bankers close to the PBOC reportedly said the swap-line was meant to reduce the role of the US dollar if China and Russia need to help each other overcome a liquidity squeeze.

Russia not fit to be part of international financial system – Cameron

The combined effect produced by Western sanctions and low oil prices proves that there’s no place for Russia in the international financial system, believes British prime minister David Cameron, urging for more pressure on Moscow.

“We should stand up very firmly against the Russian aggression that’s taking place,” Cameron said before the Parliament on Wednesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Okay, David. If you really feel that way, here's your rifle, here's you parachute, here's your camo gear, etc. And take that Dodgy Dossier that got us into the mess in Iraq with you!

Capital Controls for Russia

Bloomberg writer Leonid Bershidsky, under the headline, "Will Ruble's Rout Force Capital Controls?", wrote yesterday on what he called, "the probability that Russia will introduce capital controls."

He asserts his view that President Vladimir Putin is an "anti-Western, authoritarian" leader, noting that in 1998, a leader he views as having the same traits, Dr. Mahathir Muhammed, President of Malaysia, successfully implemented capital controls and brought his nation out of turmoil. Bershidsky then reviews what he calls, the "recipe" for how capital controls worked in Malaysia.

But the author also reports specifically on Putin's advisers calling for capital controls, and moreover, doing so, because Russia is under political attack from the West. He cites in particular, Sergei Markov, an advisor from a different alignment than well-known economist Sergei Glazyev, who reiterated his own policy proposals today, noted below.

US Targeting Hundreds of Millions of Russian Civilians

White House officials are openly expressing happiness with their siege/war tactics that they say are throwing Russia into an economic collapse and are, as a scholar defending the siege notes, “hurting the Russian public’s ability to buy food or heat homes”. This eagerness to starve and freeze children is particularly relevant given the recent publicity of the US’s tactics of starving and freezing innocent detainees as well as people claimed to be “suspects”.

The Engineered Fall of the Russian Ruble

Saudi Arabia, the most influential member of OPEC, and the United States are working together to destroy the Russian economy and destabilize the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem with waging an economic war is how easily it can become a shooting war.

If Putin starts arresting the owners of their Central Bank, the US attack will not be far behind!

U.S. Declares (Currency) War On Russia

U.S. economic terrorism (i.e. the One Bank’s economic terrorism) has hit a new extreme this week. This crime syndicate has launched what can be termed nothing less than an all-out effort to destroy the economy of Russia.

Its modus operandi is, once again, currency manipulation. What is the quickest/easiest way to destroy an economy? Drive the value of its currency as close to zero as possible. The effect of such a manipulated “devaluation” is a massive explosion in inflation. And the effect of that is to make all Russians much poorer.

The economic destruction caused by this economic terrorism affects Russians, and the Russian economy on a percentage-for-percentage basis. Each percentage lower that the banksters drive the ruble with their criminal manipulation makes Russians, and the Russian economy 1% poorer.

NATO tactical aircraft double flight intensity near Russia, Belarus borders

Tactical aircraft of North Atlantic Alliance states more than doubled flight intensity near borders of Russia and Belarus this year, Chief Commander of Russian Air Force Colonel General Viktor Bondarev told reporters on Tuesday.

“Overall number of flights by NATO tactical aircraft in regions bordering Russia and Belarus has more than doubled to exceed three thousand in 2014 against 2013,” Bondarev said.

NATO aircraft flights near Russian borders “are beyond comparison with flight intensity by Russian long-range aircraft,” the chief commander added.

The United States and NATO states have made flights of their spy planes much more intensive this year, particularly in the Baltic states. The number of flights makes 8-12 a week, the general said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Just because initiating a war with Russia would be one of the most pig-headedly, ham-fistedly stupid things the US and NATO could do right now, is, unfortunately, absolutely no guarantee that they will not do so, and that is just the hard truth here.

I have seen the demonization of Russia rise exponentially in the last couple of months. Now, we see an economic war against the ruble due to the oil price collapse, courtesy of the US and Saudi Arabia, which is already putting many US oil-related companies and projects at high risk.

I would like to very politely suggest to all those inhabiting Sodom on the Potomac, that the US military does not have the troop strength, the money, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to a conventional war with Russia; and this is what makes the military scenario so scarily dangerous here.

CRISIS IN RUSSIA: Seven reasons why Obama should’ve nixed the Congressional sanctions

Nothing shows more clearly just how little Americans have learned than their foreign policies. Belligerent, trigger-happy and naive, in recent years the blundering motivation behind them has been compounded by a naked desire to prosecute energy (and other raw materials) imperialism that will satisfy the infinite greed of its dominant neoliberal franchise.

What never ceases to baffle me is the American citizen surprise when, on going abroad (and over 74% of them never do) they discover the profound degree to which US interference in other people’s affairs has made them widely loathed. It is equalled in my experience only by the inability of Germans to understand why they get poor service in Greek restaurants.

European stocks slump; ruble gains as central bank steps up defense

European stocks dropped Wednesday, resuming their recent run of losses as investors wrestle with economic and political uncertainty throughout the region.

The Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, +0.19% fell 0.7% to 326.62, with all major sectors swimming in the red.

In Frankfurt, the DAX 30 index DAX, -0.12% fell 1% to 9,459.54. France’s CAC 40 PX1, +0.61% declined 0.9% to 4,058.65 and the U.K.’s FTSE 100 UKX, +0.11% declined 0.9% to 6,274.87.

At the same time, attention turned once again to Russia’s currency, which advanced against the dollar Wednesday following a report the Russian finance ministry has started to sell foreign currency in an effort to halt the ruble’s slide. The dollar was buying 64.674 rubles USDRUB, -15.46% compared with 67.893 late Tuesday.

Western Banks Cut Off Liquidity To Russian Entities

As Zero Hedge first reported today, shortly before noon one (and subsequently more) FX brokers advised clients that any existing Ruble positions would be forcibly closed out because "western banks have stopped pricing USDRUB", over concerns of Russian capital controls.

Worldwide Game of Thrones

The truth is that the crisis the US is drumming up is designed to cripple several economies at once, of which Russia is just one. Moreover, Russia is not as helpless as the Guardian and others want to make it appear. Russia could impose its own capital controls, among other real economic measures, that could send the whole world’s paper wealth into a tailspin.

The US government knows this but doesn’t care about the tens of millions of extras whose life savings (and livelihoods) will be wiped out in this game of thrones. Instead, behind the scenes, Congress has quietly and steadily increased the pressure, creating the economic conditions for a perfect storm in Russia (and the world) and the legal framework to bring Ukraine fully into the fold of hegemony.

Russia Completely Jammed The U.S. Navy In The Black Sea And Could Have Subsequently Blown Them Away! [Validated]

As the Russian jet approached the US vessel, the electronic device disabled all radars, control circuits, systems, information transmission, etc. on board the US destroyer. In other words, the all-powerful Aegis system, now hooked up – or about to be – with the defense systems installed on NATO’s most modern ships was shut down, as turning off the TV set with the remote control.

The Russian Su-24 then simulated a missile attack against the USS Donald Cook, which was left literally deaf and blind. As if carrying out a training exercise, the Russian aircraft – unarmed – repeated the same maneuver 12 times before flying away.

After that, the 4th generation destroyer immediately set sail towards a port in Romania.

Pentagon confirms military buildup along Russian borders for ‘peace and stability’

The Pentagon has confirmed the military buildup along Russia’s borders to ensure long-term “peace and stability” in the region. Earlier Moscow accused NATO of a sharp increase in air activity and intelligence flights in the border zone.

Replying to RIA Novosti’s query on the increased number of NATO flights around Russia's borders, a Pentagon representative told the news agency that the military presence of the alliance has increased, but all operations are carried out under utmost “transparency.”

The current efforts of the US European Command, the Pentagon official said, are in line with Operation Atlantic Resolve and demonstrate American “commitment to the collective security of NATO, the long-term peace and stability in the region”, particularly in the light of Russian “interference” in Ukraine.
