ADMITTING DEFEAT: US Threatens to Make Life Of Assad Regime ‘As Miserable as Possible’:

The United States, along with its allies, will implement a “strategy of isolation” in Syria if President Bashar Assad maintains the political process aimed at ending the war in Syria, an American diplomat was quoted as saying.

US Special Representative for Syria Jim Jeffrey said Washington would work with countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East to impose tough international sanctions on Syria if Damascus did not want to cooperate to change the constitution before the elections.

Trump's Middle East Policy Takes A Kicking At UN Assembly

It was not just US President Donald Trump getting laughed at in the UN General Assembly this week. On Iran, Palestine and other Middle East issues, Washington has drifted away from its global allies and partners, veteran diplomats told Middle East Eye.

At one of several events about Iran’s missile-building and support for foreign militias, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was heckled by a woman audience member who was expelled after yelling: “We’re sick of you killing these Iranians.”

As he exited that meeting at a Manhattan hotel, Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador to Washington, was trailed down the street by another activist calling him a “war criminal” over his country’s US-backed military deployment in Yemen.

But, according to UN analysts, these public embarrassments were overshadowed by a growing international resentment of a Trump administration that is struggling to rally allies and partners behind its policy goals in the Middle East.

Washington’s Sanctions Machine

Perhaps it is Donald Trump’s business background that leads him to believe that if you inflict enough economic pain on someone they will ultimately surrender and agree to do whatever you want. Though that approach might well work in New York real estate, it is not a certain path to success in international relations since countries are not as vulnerable to pressure as are individual investors or developers.

"Without Us, Who Knows What’s Going to Happen": Trump Warns King Salman to Buy More Weapons

US President Donald Trump called on Riyadh to increase its military spending, with an eye on more weapons sale to the "rich" kingdom.
Speaking at a campaign rally in West Virginia on Saturday, the US president stressed that he had complained that Washington was not getting what it should from Saudi Arabia during a phone conversation with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Middle East News.

Trump said he had told King Salman that Riyadh has "trillions of dollars" and could pay its military bills.

Trump further threatened to end what he claimed to be subsidies for the Saudi military.

Trump’s Interior Secretary Zinke, Calls for War Blockade on Russia

Trump’s Stepchild, Interior Secretary Zinke, Calls for War Blockade on Russia

US could use its Navy to prevent Russia’s potential energy supplies to the Middle East, Internal Secretary Ryan Zinke said, Washington Examiner reports. The blockade would actually mean an “act of war,” Russian Senator fired back.
Zinke alleged that Russia’s engagement in Syria – notably, where it is operating at the invitation of the legitimate government – is a pretext to explore new energy markets.

“I believe the reason they are in the Middle East is they want to broker energy just like they do in eastern Europe, the southern belly of Europe,” he has reportedly said.

US Goes Rogue all the way on Russia Blockade Threat

The US is asserting it has the right put a naval blockade on Russian energy exports, even if our EU and NATO allies choose Russia as a more cost effective and dependable supplier.

A naval blockade is an act of war. If you doubt this, ask the Japanese. A declassified document that David Irving dug up exposed how Churchill and Roosevelt toughened the State Department’s demands on Japan that, if it did not pull out of Manchuria, the US would blockade all scrap metal and oil imports to cripple Japan’s major industry.

They knew Japan could not accept this and would be pushed into a preemptive naval strike to secure its oil lines, presumably on Manila.

They were wrong about Manila. Roosevelt desperately needed war, as his much ballyhooed New Deal program had not created any permanent jobs.

I am not the only one who thinks that Trump, the NeoCons and the Deep State folks are borrowing a page from world war ignition techniques. We have been concerned that, with the US growing a huge national debt and with the need to keep the debt bubble afloat, it would have to go into PacMan mode, gobbling up every potential competitor.

Amerika Uber Alles

This was hell week in New York City. Traffic was paralyzed from one end of the narrow island to the other as bigwigs and their entourages flocked to the city for the fall opening of the United Nations.

Making matters worse, President Donald Trump chose the occasion to lambaste nations he does not like in a crude display of boorishness not seen since Soviet boss Nikita Khrushchev banged his shoe on his desk at the General Assembly back in 1960.

Trump reserved special venom for his pet bêtes noirs, Iran and China. His jeremiad against Iran was reportedly written by senior aide Stephen Miller, a rabidly anti-Muslim extremist who speaks with the voice of Israel’s expansionist far right.

Trump reiterated his doctrine of American ultra-nationalism. Political and economic nationalism are his credo. The president claimed he had indeed made America great again, whatever that means.

Reagan visits China

***
After communists took over power in China in 1949, successive American presidents had refused to recognize the new Chinese government and supported pro-democratic nationalists who had been exiled on the island of Taiwan, off the coast of China. U.S. support for Taiwan included sales of arms, which infuriated the communist government in Beijing. President Nixon made tentative diplomatic overtures to China in 1969 and, in October 1970, told a Time reporter if there’s anything I want to do before I die it’s go to China.

In 1971, he led the U.S. government in officially recognizing the communist Chinese government and became the first American president to visit China the next year. It was not until 1984 that another president, Reagan, would travel to China in an attempt to resolve remaining diplomatic differences.

Rachel Mitchell, a deputy Maricopa County attorney, isn't getting rave reviews even from Republicans about her performance questioning Dr. Christine Blasey Ford during the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Plans for economic development cannot happen under present sanctions, and first require Washington to obtain guarantees on denuclearisation

As expected, the third meeting between Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un produced a highly ambiguous statement.

No timeline for a declaration of Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal and no framework for nuclear dismantlement arose.

Yet optimists may disagree. The joint military declaration agreed to a cease of military exercises “aimed at each other along the Military Demarcation Line”, and the withdrawal of guard posts along the Demilitarised Zone. Pyongyang pledged to close its nuclear test facility at Tongchang-ri, as part of the two Koreas “pushing forward the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”, and inter-Korean economic cooperation projects were proposed.

Korean war to trade war, China has a Trump card to play

Tariffs are just the opening salvo in America’s battle to slow China’s rise, a head-on collision that China’s leaders have long seen coming. Beijing won’t be caught napping

The escalating trade war between China and the United States is more than just a mighty tussle over imports and exports – and the elite in both Beijing and the West know it.

It is, in effect, a battle of the utmost strategic importance, pitting China against a coterie of Western nations that see it as the gravest threat to their dominance of the existing world order. Slapping on tariffs is just the opening salvo.

On the one side, there is the clear (if not publicly admitted) goal of slowing down (if not containing altogether) China’s seemingly inexorable rise as a superpower. And on the other is China’s determination not to bow to the collective might of the West and forfeit the right to decide its own destiny.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arabian Gulf Affairs Tim Lenderking has been touring the region over the past weeks in a bid to muster enough support to form the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA), a concept similar to an Arab NATO.

The idea of forming an alliance that comprised the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council– Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman—along with the US, Egypt and Jordan, and addressed security, economic and political issues was first floated during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia last year, Lenderking said.

Trump channels Netanyahu at the U.N., as his top policy-makers meet with Iran-war-mongers

As you surely know, Donald Trump channeled Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. He mentioned Iran 14 times (compared to 0 for Russia and 4 for Israel) and all but called for regime change. Iran’s “brutal regime” was financing the destruction of Syria, its leaders “sow chaos, death and destruction,” its “corrupt dictatorship” should be isolated by the world.

This sly appeal was right out of the Netanyahu script:

[W]e ask all nations to support Iran’s people as they struggle to reclaim their religious and righteous destiny.

The media made a lot of Trump’s sovereignty doctrine– nationalism and “patriotism” over “globalism” and multilateralism– but even those remarks had a pro-Israel cast. Trump was talking about the US rejection of two Israel-bugaboos, the UN Human Rights Council and International Criminal Court.

US Officials Disappointed at Policies to Isolate Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi blasted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s report on Iran's activities, saying that it proved the American officials' disappointment at policies to isolate Tehran.

The report contains a reality and it is disappointment of the US officials over failure of their policies to isolate Iran, Qassemi said in reaction to the statements of Pompeo in a meeting themed ‘unity against Iran’ and presenting a report on Iran’s activities in New York on Wednesday.

“Today, the world and all independent countries are determined to display their resolve for respecting international agreements, international law and their responsibilities for preserving the JCPOA,” he said.

Bannon Declares ‘War Rooms’ to Win European Elections

Bannon Declares ‘War Rooms’ to Win European Elections – and That’s Not Meddling?

One trait of imperial decadence is untrammeled hubris. Given the increasingly arrant arrogance on display by United States’ officials, public figures and news media we can safely conclude that this empire is accelerating into decadence.

A recent spectacular example comes with separate visits to Europe by US defense secretary James Mattis and Steve Bannon, the former aide to President Trump.

Bannon was addressing a rightwing forum in Italy at the weekend in which he declared that he would be devoting “80 per cent” of his time to help anti-European Union parties win seats in the next European parliamentary elections due in May 2019.

Bannon said he was setting up a coordinating committee, called “The Movement”, in Brussels, from where his political project would direct “war rooms” across Europe to ensure that anti-EU and anti-immigrant parties would succeed in gaining up to a third of the total seats in the 27-nation member bloc’s parliamentary elections. In short, a declaration of political warfare. Unapologetic. Brazen. Arrogant.

Naked Emperors Don't Get Much Respect

What happens when most of your military infrastructure is suddenly obsolete?

The emperor was the last to realize he was naked. This is not unusual, emperors are the last to find out anything. Who has the fortitude to tell them the truth, especially an upsetting truth? And so it is with the US’s empire, the existence of which most of its citizens, media organs, and officials are unaware or won’t acknowledge. The truth is, the American empire, acknowledged or not, is over. It will be years before that’s accepted by the governing class. They’ll never officially inform their subjects, who are stuck with the tab for its immensely wasteful spending.

‘People actually laughed at a president’: At U.N. speech, Trump suffers the fate he always feared

President Trump has long argued that the United States has been taken advantage of by other nations — a “laughing stock to the entire World,” he said on Twitter in 2014 — and his political rise was based on the premise that he had the strength and resolve to change that.

But at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump got a comeuppance on the world’s biggest stage. Delivering a speech that aimed to establish U.S. “sovereignty” over the whims and needs of other nations, the president’s triumphant moment was marred in the first minute when he was met by laughter — at his expense.

The embarrassing exchange came when Trump boasted that his administration had accomplished more over two years than “almost any administration” in American history, eliciting audible guffaws in the cavernous chamber hall.

US President Donald Trump’s plan to bully European countries into choosing between doing business with either the US or Iran has been working – and US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell seems eager to take credit for it.

Grenell, according to the US Embassy in Berlin, has been pressuring German companies “daily” to cease business operations in Iran. He has taken to tweeting triumphantly any time a firm caves to pressure from Washington – adding the hashtag #sanctionsareworking to drive home the point.

Trump slams China at UN for ‘victimising’, ‘cheating’ and ‘plundering’ US

US president’s speech to the General Assembly suggests further escalation in trade war with Beijing, while praise for Kim Jong-un cites ‘his courage’ on nuclear disarmament

US President Donald Trump used the occasion of his second address to the United Nations on Tuesday to amplify his anger about China’s trade and economic policies, accusing Beijing of “relentless product dumping” and other unfair practices.

Singling out China as a rogue nation in terms of trade while discussing his administration’s most pressing foreign policy issues at the 73rd annual UN General Assembly in New York, Trump’s move signals further escalation in the bilateral trade war that started in July, and his administration’s determination to change the course of the Sino-US relationship, analysts said.

Laughing at Trump: here are 7 other jaw-dropping UN moments

“The UN has a special meaning in Chinese political discourse. UN membership and status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council symbolise China being accepted and embraced as a member of the global community of nation-states,” said Zhao Ma, an associate professor of Chinese history and culture at Washington University in St. Louis

China denies request for Hong Kong port call by American warship

The refusal follows exchange of trade tariffs and US sanctions on a Chinese defence ministry unit over purchase of Russian weapons

China has rejected a request for a US warship to make a port call in Hong Kong, the US consulate in Hong Kong said on Tuesday, amid rising tensions between the world’s two biggest economies.

“The Chinese government did not approve a request for a port visit to Hong Kong by the USS Wasp. We have a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect that to continue,” the consulate said.

The amphibious assault ship had been due to stop in Hong Kong next month, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed US military officials.

Trump Pushes His Destructive Iran Policy at the UN

Aside from being laughed at by the audience, Trump achieved very little in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly today. The president talked a lot about the importance of sovereignty, and then called on the rest of the world to gang up on Iran to infringe on their sovereignty. It is nothing new for hard-liners to treat the sovereignty of their country as sacrosanct at the same time that they routinely violate the sovereignty of other states, but Trump made a point of boasting about this double standard before the entire world.

There was also the usual hypocritical denunciation of Iranian behavior that we have come to expect in these speeches:

Seven Years after NATO Overthrew Gaddafi in Libya, Western-Backed Gov Begs for Another Intervention

A month of violent in-fighting in Libya’s capital has prompted the “official” government of Libya to call for UN intervention, just seven years after the 2011 NATO intervention laid waste to the country and plunged it into a state of chaos from which it has never recovered.

In late August, the Libyan capital of Tripoli became gripped by in-fighting between rival militant factions, factions that all technically operate under Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA). The fighting allegedly began when one of the armed groups, the Kaniyat, launched an attack on Tripoli after media reports had emerged detailing the lavish lifestyles of other GNA armed groups, like the Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigade.

Local media reports have indicated that the warring groups have used heavy weapons, including artillery, to gain the upper hand and that residential areas have been targeted. In addition, the chaos in the capital also resulted in one of the largest prison breaks in Libya’s history, resulting in the escape of around 400 detainees, some of whom joined the fight.

5 Reasons Why Washington Was the Main Culprit in Ahvaz Terror Attack

On Sunday, September 23, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani couldn’t be more accurate when he said the United States is a "bully" that wants to create insecurity in the Islamic Republic, following an attack on a military parade that killed 26 people, including members of the country's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

Rouhani further accused the US-backed Persian Gulf Arab states of providing financial and military support for anti-government terrorist groups inside Iran.

This is not out of the ordinary. President Trump’s last year visit to Saudi Arabia, during which he loudly pushed for general hostility toward Iran, can’t help but also be noted for being followed so quickly by virtually unheard of terror attacks and unrest in Iran. On balance, the Trump administration isn't eyeing America's safety as much as a regime change:

Officially, the only mission for U.S. troops on the ground in the region ? including about 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and 2,200 in Syria ? is to defeat and destroy ISIS.

But recently the White House has begun to reveal a massive new mission on the horizon for U.S. troops in the Middle East: containing Iran.

National security adviser John Bolton on Monday said countering Iran’s influence in Syria and elsewhere is a major goal of the U.S. military mission in the Middle East.

“We’re not going to leave as long as Iranian troops are outside Iranian borders, and that includes Iranian proxies and militias,” Bolton said>>>

“I think it’s horrible what the Democrats have done,” he said to reporters at a meeting with the United Nations General Assembly. “It’s a con game they’re playing … they’re really con artists.”

Additionally, Trump made it quite clear what he thought of the second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, and her flimsy accusations.

“The second accuser has nothing,” he said. “The second accuser doesn’t even know, she thinks maybe it could’ve been him, maybe not. She admits that she was drunk. She admits time lapses, there are time lapses.”

The blocking of Palestinian rights at an international level is endorsed by the PA

The illusion of two camps – Israel and the US purportedly opposing the Palestinian Authority and the international community – is being promoted by Abbas, and none of the political actors are averse to the gimmick. As US President Donald Trump surpasses the pro-Israel approach of previous US presidents, it has become easier to focus on the current contempt for international law and ignore the subtle manoeuvres which paved the way for the Zionist colonisation of Palestine. Yet it is impossible to ignore one main fact: Trump and Israel are holding themselves beyond any accountability whatsoever and are wilfully eliminating Palestinian rights, while the international community and the PA hold conferences and meetings, and give meaningless speeches, in which support is professed but action is withheld.

China Leaves Door Open For Trade War Talks

China leaves door open for trade war talks but not with American ‘knife at its neck’

The door for renewed high-level trade talks between Beijing and Washington is still open but China will not agree to proceed with a “knife at its neck”, Wang Shouwen, the vice-minister of commerce who led the Chinese delegation to Washington for the last round of trade talks in August, said on Tuesday.

China has referred to US tariffs as a knife at its throat since the first levies were imposed in July. While Wang and seven other top officials briefing the media on Monday’s “white paper” did not say directly that the United States would have to remove all tariffs before any new trade talks, that condition seemed to be implied.

The white paper is the country’s most comprehensive statement of its trade war stance to date and came as new tit-for-tat tariffs came into effect.

Document Lays Out China's Trade Stance

White paper warns US actions risk global economic woes

China published a white paper on Sino-US trade frictions on Monday, defending the legitimacy of its positions on trade and innovation practices while accusing the United States of trade bullying and intimidation.
***
It said US President Donald Trump's administration has trumpeted his "America First" slogan since 2017 and has abandoned the fundamental norms of mutual respect and equal consultation that guide international relations.

Rather, it has brazenly preached unilateralism, protectionism and economic hegemony, making false accusations against many countries and regions, particularly China, intimidating other countries through trade measures such as imposing tariffs and attempting to impose its own interests on China through extreme pressure, according to the white paper.

China has been dealing with these differences by seeking common ground while shelving divergences. The US, however, has been contradicting itself and constantly challenging China, which caused serious damage to bilateral trade ties and poses a grave threat to the multilateral trading system>>>

US Ruining 'Big Picture' Of Bilateral Relations:: China Daily editorial

***
Punitive tariffs may not be as damaging to Beijing as Washington believes, and the US will not escape unscathed, which could damage growth prospects across the broader world economy.

But that is not the moot point. That the issue is increasingly moving beyond trade is the real cause of concern, and that is where the real danger lies.

When a trade conflict spills over into other aspects of bilateral ties, the consequences become hard to predict. That's why signs of the accelerating drain on mutual goodwill deserve serious attention from both parties.

Although Washington has repeatedly named Beijing as a strategic competitor, US State Secretary Mike Pompeo's description of it as a greater threat to the US than Russia is hard to digest. So are his labeling of Beijing as a "non-transparent government", and his allegation of "awful abuses" of religious groups>>>

U.S. History of Chemical Weapons Use and Complicity in War Crimes

The world is once again witnessing the height of U.S. hypocrisy as members of the U.S. State Department ratchet up anti-Russian and anti-Syrian rhetoric surrounding the use of chemical weapons in Syria and the UK. Ambassador Nikki Haley has warned Syria, Iran and Russia that they will be held accountable for their pre-determined use of chemical weapons in Idlib on innocent civilians. No evidence was provided to support her threats. The United States carried out cruise missile strikes on two previous occasions, and each time provided no evidence to prove their assertion that the Syrian government used chemical weapons in attacking civilians, nor was any rational reason given for such an obviously irrational decision on the part of the Syrian state. No evidence has ever been provided to justify the clear international crime of aggression committed by the United States on these two earlier occasions. Now, the UK and the U.S. are both attempting to accuse the Russian government of using chemical weapons in an alleged attempted assassination of a Russian national on UK soil. Once again, no real evidence has been presented, only assertions and hearsay.

Gregg Jarrett: Rod Rosenstein’s coup attempt to depose Trump should not go unpunished

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s actions, as recounted by the New York Times Friday, are the equivalent of an attempted coup — a plot to overthrow the president.

As the Times reveals, Rosenstein was furious that Democrats blamed him for the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Rosenstein, who had volunteered to write the firing memorandum, was “regretful and emotional.” His behavior was described as “erratic.”

He blamed Trump.

So, in an apparent act of vengeance, he proposed secretly recording the president to try to gain damaging information about him.

He solicited others to wear wires, including Andrew McCabe, who was later fired as Assistant FBI Director. Rosenstein is said to have discussed recruiting cabinet members to depose Trump under the 25th Amendment.
