The Right May Finally Get Its War on Iran

At the top of Pompeo’s list are demands that Iran end its support for Hezbollah, including its supply of ballistic missiles to the Lebanese Shiite organization, and the “halt [to] further launching or development of nuclear-capable missile systems.”

Those demands reflect an extraordinary agreement in December 2017, reported in the Israeli press, between the Trump administration and the Netanyahu government on a joint strategic work plan that included precisely those points on Pompeo’s list—countering Iranian ballistic missile development, as well as the supply of more accurate missiles to Hezbollah through Syria.

The consequences of enforcing such demands would be a dangerous destabilization of the already tense military standoff between Israel and Iran. Iran now depends on a combination of its own ballistic missiles and Hezbollah’s ability to retaliate against Israel to deter an Israeli, Saudi or U.S. attack on its homeland. To agree to stop testing its own missiles to improve their accuracy and supplying Hezbollah with accurate weapons would allow Israel, which has long wanted to destroy Hezbollah’s military capability, to degrade Hezbollah’s deterrent over time through its own missile strikes. The net result would be to leave Iran with a seriously degraded deterrent, especially in light of Israel’s modern missile defense system

Webmaster's Commentary:

More wars would be absolutely the most lousy way to create peace in the region; but apparently, the Trump Administration, collectively, doesn't have the smarts to figure that out, and has been so totally overwhelmed by Netanyahu's gusty rhetoric on Iran, that they cannot even imagine a moderate try at getting Iran and Israel to the negotiating table, at least on some issues of concern to both countries.

And with the bribery charges finally being brought against him, Netanyahu may well want to start such a war very quickly, so he can declare a "national emergency", postponing the April elections to another time down the road.

Just as a wounded animal is most dangerous when it has been wounded, so is a politically wounded leader at their most destructive when that has happened; perhaps, Netanyahu never really imagined it was coming, but his having to deal the fallout of today's charges may accelerate the cries for war against Iran.

He desperately needs some kind of misdirection away from himself, and toward the alleged" bad guys"; unfortunately, after the blow up of the Trump/Kim Jung Summit in Hanoi, President Trump, and particularly those around him, may well feel that they need the same kind of situation happening for Trump, to refocus the national attention elsewhere.

We may well see a series of situations ratcheting up around the Middle East, with some phony false flags to be blamed on the "usual suspects" (Iran, Syria), and off the world goes to war.
