US troops looted personal possessions and military artefacts from Afghan site of 19th-century British massacre while on deployment in 2009

A historic 19th century battlefield was looted by US troops on deployment in Afghanistan in 2009.

Military artefacts and and personal possessions buried alongside victims were stolen from the site of the Battle of Maiwand, where British soldiers fought.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) says troops may have 'broken international law' after many of the items from the massacre were sold to collectors and turned up online.
