Winter Storm Wesley Impacts: Power Outages, Schools Closed, Flights Canceled, Interstates Shut Down

Winter Storm Wesley continued to cause trouble Thursday morning with schools closed or delayed for hours, power outages and hundreds of flight cancellations.

South Dakota's Gov. Kristi Noem ordered that state government offices be closed in 54 counties because of the weather. Ellsworth Air Force Base, 10 miles northeast of Rapid City, was closed to all but essential personnel.

More than 85,000 customers were without power in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa as of 12:30 p.m. EDT Thursday, according to poweroutages.us. Ice was causing much of the problems in Minnesota. Jackson County in Minnesota reported more than 100 power poles had been knocked down.
