US-China Collaboration Summit Breaks Through The Insanity Of US-China Trade War

While the world watches America shoot itself in the foot yet again as President Trump targeted Huawei as an enemy of the state, a beacon of sanity shown through the darkness this week as 400 U.S. state leaders, business people, non-profits and Chinese delegates representing four provinces, converged on Lexington, Kentucky from May 22-24 for the 5th Annual US-China Governors Collaboration Summit. This summit which rotates between China and the USA every year, was especially important as it cut through the narrative that America is one homogeneous beast with one singular outlook aimed at world dominance.

CHINESE STATE REPORTERS CAUGHT "SNOOPING AROUND" NATO BASE, GERMANY INVESTIGATES

SOURCE: ZEROHEDGE

Journalists representing China's main state media outlet are in hot water after they were seen filming NATO military equipment and asking probing questions of German soldiers about their daily routines and military jobs.

The incident has threatened to alight fresh controversy related to European and US suspicious of aggressive global spying tactics by Beijing, not the least of which is Chinese firm Huawei's rollout of next-generation 5G products inside Germany, which Berlin has controversially been favorable to, resulting in the Trump administration notifying the German government in March that the US would limit the intelligence it shares with German security agencies should Berlin move forward in permitting Huawei to build the country's mobile-internet infrastructure.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The first question I would need to ask is, are why did the Chinese reporters do this so ham-fistedly, in order to draw attention to themselves?!?

The second question I would have to ask, is why did the NATO personnel at the site allow this to happen in the first place?!?

Folks, I need to suggest here, politely, that this may have been an exercise in entrapment on the part of NATO, and was engineered to focus, for Americans and Europeans, on the "China Bad Syndrome", which has been bandied about, in Europe, and the US, for quite some time.

China accuses U.S. officials of misleading public on trade war

China on Friday accused U.S. officials of lying to the public about their trade war, as rising tensions between the world's two largest economies kept financial markets in a state of unease.

Talks to end the trade dispute collapsed earlier this month, with the two sides in a stalemate over U.S. demands that China change its policies to address a number of key U.S. grievances, including theft of intellectual property and subsidies for state enterprises.

Washington has slapped higher tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, prompting Beijing to retaliate, and effectively banned U.S. firms from doing business with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world's largest telecom network gear maker.

How the U.S.-China trade war became a conflict over the future of tech

It may have begun as a trade war, but the U.S. conflict with China is increasingly becoming a technology war.

President Trump’s decision to confront Beijing over policies that he says discriminate against foreign companies and distort global markets has become a battle for control of advanced communications and computing technologies.

That evolution is taking the transpacific conflict into sensitive realms of national security and human rights, making a quick settlement an ever more distant outcome. It is also putting at risk a wide array of U.S.-China technology cooperation, including easy access to visas for researchers and venture capital funds for U.S. start-ups — and threatening to boomerang on U.S. companies that China might retaliate against.

China Victory Assured With Any US/Iran Conflict

The outcome of a U.S. war with Iran is as predictable as the outcome of the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. The great ship of state ends up at the bottom of the ocean – everything else is just small drama.

The above is not a desperate cry for caution or pragmatism. It is based on the fact that our military is 100 percent reliant on China for critical technology metals, alloys, magnets, garnets and other post-oxide rare earth materials.

China relies on Iranian oil and has clearly signaled that it will defy US sanctions on Iran. China has also recently signaled that it is hunkering down for what may prove to be a protracted trade war.

US pressures to prevent China companies from operating in Israel

The US is pressuring Israel to prevent Chinese companies from entering Israeli facilities.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton addressed this issue during his visit to Israel in January, and warned against the entry of Chinese technology companies, such as Huawei and ZTE, to the Israeli market, Haaretz reported yesterday.

The US warnings come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to boost trade ties with China, but at the same time is facing US pressure. The Marker newspaper reported this week that the Cabinet abstained from setting up a special committee to monitor China’s technology and investment, despite US pressures. The report added that Israel is now seeking an approach that appeases America.

"Retaliation Is Imminent": Here Are China's "Nuclear" Trade War Options

Almost exactly one year ago, when the US-China trade war was still in its early stages and when conventional wisdom (wrong, as it usually is) dictated that the two sides would never escalate to the "tech cold war" stage we have now as it is in "nobody's interest" to launch an all-out trade war, we listed what were Beijing's five at the time "nuclear" retaliation options; these included currency depreciation, sales of US Treasurys, blocking of US services, curbing of oil shipments and a rare-earth metal export ban, crippling US supply chains.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What President Trump, apparently is pathologically unable to see, is that the word "negotiations": takes honest, give and take, not "My way, or the Highway!!

I am still very concerned, about the degree to which the US is trying to militarily rattle them, by these so-called "Freedom of Access" journeys in the South China Sea by our Navy; unfortunately, trade wars can morph into shooting wars very quickly.

Beijing has developed and built the first prototype of a magnetic levitation train which engineers claim can travel at a top speed of 600 kilometres per hour (373 miles per hour).

The train boasts twice the speed of the Eurostar fleet and could cover the distance between London and Paris in 49 minutes.

India’s Strategic Alliance with U.S.: Towards an Anti-Russian Military Pivot

India’s much-touted and over-hyped policy of “multi-alignment” is seeming more and more like a cover for unconvincingly disguising the country’s strategic alliance the US, especially after its Ambassador to America strongly hinted that Modi will undertake an anti-Russian military pivot during his second term in office.

There’s little doubt that India will ditch Russia like it just recently did Iran after its Ambassador to America strongly hinted as much in an exclusive interview that he gave to CNBC. The South Asian state’s top diplomatic representative to the US told the outlet the following in an article provocatively headlined “India, facing sanctions for Russian arms deals, says it wants to pivot spending to the US“:

Israel: “Wiped off The Map”. The Rumor of the Century, Fabricated by the US Media to Justify An All out War on Iran

Global Research Editor’s Note

The following text by Arash Norouzi first published by the Mossadegh Project and Global Research in January 2007 confirms that the alleged “Wiped Off the Map” statement by Iran’s president was never made.

In the light of recent US threats directed Iran, we are reposting this important article.

Iran does not constitute a threat to Israel.

The rumor was fabricated by the American media with a view to discrediting Iran’s head of state and providing a justification for waging an all out war on Iran. the article provides of media manipulation and “propaganda in action”.

Iran is blamed for refusing to abide by the “reasonable demands” of “the international community”.

In recent developments, Iran is persistently described as threatening the security of Israel. And Israel is described as instrumental in determining US foreign policy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the $64,000 dollar question here is, if the US invades Iran, what will Russia and China's parliaments do?@?

Sit back and sing, "Kumbya"?!?

I rather think not!!

Venezuela to Create 4G Network With Help of China's Huawei, Russian Companies

Venezuela hopes to develop a nationwide 4G system with the help of Russian and Chinese technology, particularly from the Asian country’s Huawei, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said.

The Venezuelan president stated that Caracas is aiming to develop its satellite technologies.

"There are a lot of things that I should address. The first one is the creation of a telecommunications corporation… I have ordered to make an investment and, together with China's technologies, Huawei technologies and the technologies of Russian companies, bring telecommunications [to a new level] and make a nationwide 4G network a reality in Venezuela to ensure Venezuela has fast communications, internet, and telephony", Maduro said in an address published on Twitter late on Thursday.

WE FINALLY KNOW WHERE THE SCANDALOUS OZONE-DESTROYING CHEMICALS ARE REALLY COMING FROM

SOURCE: CARLY CASSELLA @ SCIENCEALERT.COM
It's been exactly one year since US scientists reported a mysterious surge in ozone-destroying chemicals, known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Banned in 1987 under the globally signed Montreal Protocol, there was only one explanation: somewhere out there, in an unknown location, someone must have gone rogue, setting back progress on the ozone hole by a decade or more.

After much speculation, the whereabouts and magnitude of these harmful emissions has been confirmed in scientific research. As earlier reporting in The New York Times had already suggested, they seem to be coming from the northeast coast of mainland China.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, geopolitically, here is one of the West's "cage the rage, and engage" opportunities,by not screaming "China bad!" for this happening, but collaborating with China's top scientists, getting the Chinese government's blessing, to work with them to reduce this.

In my world, collaboration trumps confrontation, nearly every darn time.

Huawei builds its own chip factory in Cambridge to counter Arm blow

Huawei is to make its own chips at a new factory in Cambridge UK technology hotspot as it fights back from the latest backlash from the US-China trade war.

The chip factory is slated for the 550-acre former Spicers site at Sawston for which Huawei recently paid £37.5 million, as first revealed by Business Weekly.

It appears the Chinese ICT giant had anticipated escalation of the bitter China-US impasse in making the Cambridge land acquisition as part of multi-billion dollar investment in the UK economy.

Xi Jinping’s Rare Earth Visit Highlights Weak Spot in U.S. Trade Strategy

When Chinese President Xi Jinping unexpectedly toured a rare earth mining facility following the announcement of U.S. sanctions on Huawei, the message was unmistakable: China is prepared to use its domination of raw materials used in virtually all high-tech manufacturing to gain leverage in the trade dispute.

China is the largest supplier of rare earth materials that are used in everything from mobile phones to nuclear power to guided missiles. Xi’s visit highlighted the fact that just as Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE require U.S. technology for their products, U.S. technology and national security manufacturers rely on Chinese rare earths.

China: U.S. resembles 'Don Quixote' in seeing other powers as threats

China told the world’s main disarmament forum on Wednesday that U.S. foreign policy was destabilising, baffling and redolent of Don Quixote, the Spanish fictional hero whose misplaced determination leads him on a series of doomed endeavours.

“The Cold War mentality has come back to drive the security strategy and policy of a major power,” China’s disarmament ambassador Li Song told the Conference on Disarmament, a long-stalemated arena for arms talks at the United Nations in Geneva.

“In particular the U.S. keeps saying other countries make it feel unsafe – this is truly baffling,” he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ambassador Song appears to be correct, in his assessment.

And I would add, that many people, who in the last election, believed that Donald Trump would be better choice as President, are now feeling "getter's remorse"; the man doesn't seem to understand that the word "negotiations" means honest give and take by each side; it is NOT "my way OR THE HIGHWAY"

THE PENTAGON ASKS TRUMP TO SEND THOUSANDS OF U.S. TROOPS TO THE MIDDLE EAST AS TENSIONS WITH IRAN CONTINUE TO RISE

SOURCE: THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

The more steps that we take toward a war with Iran, the more likely it becomes that somebody will do something really stupid that will actually trigger one. By cutting off Iran’s oil exports, we are threatening to completely wreck their economy, and at this point they feel backed into a corner. And the Iranians have already watched the U.S. invade two countries that they share a border with (Afghanistan and Iraq), and so it is understandable that they are a bit paranoid that it could happen to them too. President Trump keeps saying that he doesn’t want a war with Iran, but the Iranians do not believe a single word any U.S. politician says. Instead, they watch what we actually do very, very closely, and the fact that the Pentagon wants to deploy thousands of new troops to the Middle East is definitely going to freak them out. The following comes from Fox News…

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, just because something is one of the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid thing the US and its military could do, is absolutely no guarantee that they won't do it.

And there is a paragraph after the last one I copied, which I don't believe at all; the writer of this article, characterizes Iran's leadership as "insane", and frankly, I wouldn't go there.

I think that the Iranians care as much for their kids, and their country, as we do for our kids and our country. In reading presstv.com (an English language version of Iranian state-approved news), you see kids, young men and young women, competing in both sports, and intellectual combat, like building and programming robots, and mathanasium challenges.

One of the best, highest ranked global universities for computer science, to be found in Iran

They understand that they live in the 21st century, and want their kids to be as competitive and ready, as they can possibly be.

So Mr. President, a word, please: any kind of invasion/attack against Iran, of course, preceded by a "false flag, to be blamed against it, (most probably courtesy of Mossad) is NOT what We the People wanted, when they voted you into office. They hired you to run this country on a peace and prosperity platform; not more endless wars.

And please understand, that if you do this, Israel's Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu will not give a rat's anus, if we wind up with hundreds, or thousand American troops dead or maimed for life.

Israel is always eager for other countries to fight their wars for it, so that the costs in blood, and money, will only be absorbed by those proxy fighters, and not Israel.

And there is another question about this potential for further deployment of Americans in the Middle East; what happens when Russia and/or China, decide to come in on Iran's side?!?

Do you remember what happened in Syria, when Russian troops and weaponry got rid if most of the jihadi there (including those paid for by US tax funds?!?)

Sir, please don't back away from asking this of Kenneth McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, and Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan; as of an article dated 16 May, at bloomberg.com stated:

US "Evidence" of Iran Threat readied for Release by the Pentagon. The article went on to state:

"The evidence may be released within a day, according to one of the officials, because the White House recognizes it needs to disclose more documentation to skeptical allies, U.S. lawmakers and the public.

These include images of the two dhows, slow-moving vessels that U.S. analysts believe were carrying cruise missiles that are designed to attack land targets and would be fired directly from the boats rather than shipped to other locations, according to one of the defense officials.

The vessels could be easily disguised among the many dhows that transit the Persian Gulf in routine commerce -- unlike the easily spotted speedboats that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has long used to intimidate crews of oil vessels from other nations and occasionally to harass American ships in the Persian Gulf"

Translation; they are "cherry picking" the data, to make it appear that there IS a credible threat from Iran, and that is what will be shown to Congress and to you, President Trump.

And Mr. President, forgive me, but if US lawmakers, the public, and allies may be characterized as being "skeptical", about these claims, please remember the following: The US government flat out lied about "Saddam Hussein's having alleged "weapons of mass destruction", to get the Iraq war going

It was all about the oil, and insuring that it was only sold in US dollars, and Iraq is still one hot, sticky mess from that never-ending war.

Mr. President, you and Congress may state the need for "confrontation", because Israel wants to get this war going quickly, as they are unsure if you are getting "cold feet" about it; but sir, if you do this, it will be another war, based on lies, to create confrontation where there could possibly be collaboration.

US governmental credibility has been well and truly flushed, when you ordered that the US withdraw from the P5+1 Agreement; please don't make this any worse than it already is, as the Middle East is already on the cusp of disaster.

China says trade talks can’t continue unless US addresses its ‘wrong actions’

The latest U.S. actions on trade are preventing negotiations with Beijing from proceeding, China’s Commerce Ministry said Thursday.

“If the U.S. would like to keep on negotiating it should, with sincerity, adjust its wrong actions. Only then can talks continue,” Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng said Thursday in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation.

He did not mention any U.S. actions specifically, but it’s been a tense couple of weeks between the world’s two-largest economies. President Donald Trump unexpectedly accused China of reneging on a deal earlier this month and announced that tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods would increase to 25% from 10% on May 10. Beijing retaliated with raising levies on $60 billion worth of U.S. products. In the last two weeks, his administration also put Chinese telecom giant Huawei on a blacklist that prevents it from buying from American companies without U.S. government permission.

We're Headed for Civilizational Crisis. US Rivalry With China, Russia, Everyone Else Is a Side-Show

Talk about a graphic display of soft power: Beijing this week hosted the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations.

Organized under the direct supervision of President Xi Jinping it took place amid an “Asian Culture Carnival.” Sure, there were dubious, kitschy and syrupy overtones, but what really mattered was what Xi himself had to say to China and all of Asia.

In his keynote speech, the Chinese leader essentially stressed that one civilization forcing itself upon another is “foolish” and “disastrous.” In Xi’s concept of a dialogue of civilizations, he referred to the New Silk Roads, or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as programs that “have expanded the channels for communication exchanges.”

Xi’s composure and rationality present a stark, contrasting message to US President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign.

May 22 10:32

Why capturing Huawei is no victory in tech war

It’s geopolitical, geoeconomic war. Cold, so far, but now about to descend to deep freeze. The US National Security Strategy unmistakably spells it out. China is a strategic competitor and must be contained, no holds barred, on all fronts: economic, military and most of all, technological.

Enter the current, concerted offensive across the spectrum, from 5G and AI to moves attempting to prevent the coming of globalization 2.0. Add to it maximum pressure all over the world to prevent nations from joining the New Silk Roads, or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the organizing foreign policy concept for China in the foreseeable future and the strategic road map for Eurasian integration up to 2049.

It’s all interconnected; the Trump administration’s trade war, Google blocking Huawei from the enhanced Android OS, the demonization of Belt and Road. It’s all about control of global supply chains and technological infrastructure.

China's police now have laser rifles that can 'set a whole person on fire' up to a kilometre away

China has developed a new portable laser weapon that can zap a target from nearly a kilometre away, according to researchers involved in the project.

The ZKZM-500 laser assault rifle is classified as being “non-lethal” but produces an energy beam that cannot be seen by the naked eye but can pass through windows and cause the “instant carbonisation” of human skin and tissues.

Ten years ago its capabilities would have been the preserve of sci-fi films, but one laser weapons scientist said the new device is able to “burn through clothes in a split second … If the fabric is flammable, the whole person will be set on fire”.

"The Markets Implications Are Enormous": Trade War With China Is Not About Trade But About Geopolitics

Forget soybeans, auto imports, iPhones, crude oil, and cheap Chinese gadgets. Also forget tariffs, duties, and subsidies. Even forget weapons.

The real reason behind the US-China "trade" war has little to do with actual trade, and everything to do with what China's president, Xi Jinping, said when he visited a memory chip plant in the city of Wuhan in early 2018. In a white lab coat, he made an unexpectedly sentimental remark, comparing a computer chip to a human heart: “No matter how big a person is, he or she can never be strong without a sound and strong heart”.

In response to the widening gap between Washington and Beijing, a major Chinese TV broadcaster has pulled Hollywood films and Chinese films with scenes shot in the US from its schedules, replacing them with classic Chinese war films showing Chinese troops defeating Americans.

China Movie Channel, better known as CCTV-6, has begun filling its prime evening slots with classic anti-American Chinese war films. US destroyer armed with missiles enters S. China Sea in challenge to Beijing’s territorial claims

A US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer sailed next to a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, ignoring repeated warnings from Beijing to stay clear of the region amid rising tensions between the two economic superpowers.

On Sunday, the USS Preble (DDG-88), armed with Tomahawk missiles, sailed along the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea in order to “challenge” the Asian giant’s claim to the area. DHS says Chinese-made drones used by cops, ICE and American businesses could be sending data back to Beijing, with analysts warning that 80% of all drones in the US are made in China

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent out an alert on Monday warning U.S. firms and government agencies of a potential data risk from Chinese-made drones.

The notice titled 'Chinese Manufactured Unmanned Aircraft Systems' warns that sensitive flight data might be sent to their manufacturers in China, where it can be accessed by the government.

It goes on to say that U.S. officials have 'strong concerns about any technology product that takes American data into the territory of an authoritarian state that permits its intelligence services to have unfettered access to that data or otherwise abuses that access.'

Rural Iowans ponder Trump alternatives as China trade war drags on

Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg asked a crowd of supporters packed into an Iowa brewery this weekend whether the United States has a plan to win the ongoing trade war with China.

“Nooo,” was the response.

The world’s two largest economies have been locked in a 10-month trade war that has roiled global supply chains and rattled financial markets. U.S. farmers, who helped carry Trump to his surprise 2016 election win, have been among the hardest-hit as China has imposed tariffs on imports of U.S. agricultural products, including soybeans, pork and grain sorghum in response to U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.

CORPORATE MEDIA SETTING UP IRAN AS NEW "THREAT" THAT MUST BE CONFRONTED

Authored by Janine Jackson via Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting,

The Washington Post editorial’s headline (5/14/19) had the US “drifting” toward war with Iran—another example, as analyst Nima Shirazi quipped, of the “world’s superpower somehow having no agency over its own imperialism.”
If we can still call things “surreal,” that would describe watching corporate media do the same things they did in the run-up to the Iraq War, things they later disavowed: the credulous repetition of administration claims about the supposed threat; the reliance, for interpretation of “intelligence,” on officials with well known records for manipulating intelligence; the stenographic reporting of ‘troubling’ actions by the enemy state, that later have to be walked back.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mr. President, a word, please; this hyped up, potential military confrontation with Iran, is one of the most ludicrous creations of your Administration.

We understand that Netanyahu, and Sheldon Adelson, are pushing you to the max to have the US start or trigger this war, as they have tried a number of administrations ago (so that the IDF doesn't have to fight Iran, but the costs in blood and money, will be totally those of the American people).

But the only reason for it, would be economic in nature, because Israel wants Iran broken up, so that it will get lost in its own internal squabbles, and not be a practical, economic threat any longer.

When citizens are defending their homeland, and there's lots of skin in the game, if you will, they will fight, to the death, if they have to, to keep the foreign fighters away from their doors.

And what if Russia and China weigh in on Iran's side?!?

They know, President Trump, what the US has in terms of weaponry, troop strength, manufacturing, and financing.

They also know that at least that we know of, the National Dept is running around $22 trillion right now.

The US government is broke, desperate, and may use this war to attempt to distract ordinary people from understanding, what has happened to the economy since your watch began.

For the monied, it's wonderful; for those of us who are not... not quite so good.

I fear that in order to feed these endless wars and occupations you have approved (by not pulling out our troops from some, or all of these quagmires) we are going to see the reinstitution of the draft in this country, to keep up military strength.

And THAT, sir, will be the moment the fertilizer hits the ventilation system.

And I say this, because many Americans are now awakened to the reality that all wars are economic in nature; how likely, then, are they to respond to a draft when they know the all wars are bankers' wars, and that financial institutions profit big-time, from wars and death?!?

This may lead to riots of such a nature that local police and military members are unable to put them down "with extreme prejudice".

Then what, Mr. President?!?

I would like to politely suggest, that if you are so impossibly incapable of "caging the rage and engaging" with world leaders, this needs to be made the responsibility of someone else, please, who can.

The "mesmerizing effect" you have on your base, doesn't cut it with world leaders who really understand the meaning of the word "negotiation", and always work to "be the adults in the room." with rational judgement, and a willingness to compromise.

Right now, on the international stage, two of those poster people, for being adults in the room, are Sergei Lavrov , and his boss, President Putin; they are constantly trying to take the "military/political edge off" of world situations, and look where negotiations can be win/win; unfortunately, sir, the world, right now, is seeing you churlish; impetuous; ill-mannered, and very much an arrested adolescent, wearing some very luxurious grown people's clothing.

Major Chinese airline demands compensation from Boeing over 737 MAX grounding

China Eastern Airlines has requested compensation from the US aerospace giant Boeing over financial damages the carrier had to sustain over the compulsory grounding and suspended delivery of 737 MAX aircraft since March.

“The grounding of 737 MAX aircraft since March 11, 2019 has caused relatively big losses to China Eastern. With the passing of time, related losses will further expand,” the state-run People’s Daily cited the company as saying. “At the same time, delayed deliveries of planes ordered by China Eastern also caused economic losses.”

The Shanghai-based airline didn’t specify precisely how large the required compensation is. The company is reportedly closely monitoring Boeing's work to fix safety risks of its 737 MAX aircraft.

WEST VS EAST AND SOUTH

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have always thought highly of Pepe Escobar, and consider what he has to say very well nuanced, and intelligent; but this Administration's goose-stepping, mind-numbed, attitude of "my way or the highway" that is always talking up this "clash of civilizations, doesn't seem to realize that there can, and should be, "A Collaboration of Civilizations", for the sake of peace, and the future of this planet.

I know that many of you who read "WRH" have kids around them they love and adore; our little family of two has a number of kids like that, in our extended family, who are just discovering the practical magic of intellectual growth, and a positive sense of self.

I want these kids to grow and prosper, and find their place in the world as they mature; I am certain that the Chinese people want that for their kids as well.

But this consistent, militaristic posturing by the US government, coupled with the reality, that its military doesn't have the weaponry; the money; the manufacturing, or the troop strength, to actually win a positive result in a war with China; and one can see, through the examples of history, how trade wars can mushroom quickly into shooting wars.

I do not want to see the US continue to attempt to resolve all of its geopolitical differences with war, which seems, at this point in the Trump Administration, to be the only thing it believes it can use to do that.

And we have seen "just how well" that "solution" has worked out in Afghanistan; Iraq; Syria; Yemen and Libya; and the other "less covered US engendered wars. the short answer is, it has not, and Lord, please save us from one more damned quagmire.

Mr. President, the chances of us meeting socially are severely limited; I am not one of the monied, nor connected, except for being connected to the ideal that it IS possible to resolve our differences without war.

TRADE HARDBALL: CHINA THREATENS TO CUT OFF US SUPPLY OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS

SOURCE: MIKE MISH SHEDLOCK
China produces 80% of the world's rare earth elements. They are used in weapons, cell phones, hybrid cars, and magnets.

China does not have the means to match the US in the total number or amount of tariffs. But China can strike back in other ways. One critical way would be to cut off the US supply of rare earth elements.

Bloomberg reports Xi’s Trip to Rare-Earths Plant Stokes Talk of Trade Retaliation

Shares in JL MAG Rare-Earth Co. surged by their daily limit Monday after state news agency Xinhua said the Chinese president had stopped by the company in Jiangxi. Official news outlets give regular updates on the whereabouts of top leaders, sometimes leading to share spikes on the belief that companies have been handed official backing.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mr. President, a word, please; the continued lack of availability of these rare earth elements, will be a bitter pill to swallow by those manufacturers who truly believed that you were going to "Make America Great Again", this time, in the manufacturing sphere.

With the agricultural tariffs, you have already bankrupted American farmers, to nearly the point of utter financial collapse, and sometimes, suicide.

WISCONSIN FARMER TELLS FOX NEWS SUICIDES, BANKRUPTCY RISING IN RURAL U.S. AMID CHINA TRADE WAR

Your attempts to anger China into submission, rather than create a win/win environment in which these trade matters could be reasonably resolved, are hurting your base enormously.

The Chinese culture, even though the Chinese people identify as Communist, at this point in the 21st century, have always been a mercantile people, wanting to trade for reasonable profit.

And if their "unreasonable demands" have hurt the American economy in some way for some time, is there no "gradual" way of reversing this, in the spirit of sweet logic and reason?!?

I would like to hope there would be; because, sir, living on a first-strike target here in the middle of the Pacific, my worst nightmare would be that if a shooting war between the US an China happens, Oahu would be taken out very quickly, due to the number of military bases clustered here on Oahu; these are no secret, sir: they can be viewed on
tripadvisor.com, just where I found them.

Attractions/Activities on Oahu

And Mr. President, if real, moral, reasonable negotiations are not your quite forte, I would respectfully suggest you outsource these to someone from your administration who can "cage the rage, and engage" China in these negotiations, and get them the heck back on track; because President Trump, to an impartial observer, they appear to be absolutely off the tracks right now.

The U.S. Ultimatum on Huawei Is Backfiring

The U.S. is putting pressure on its many partners across the world to follow its lead and ban Huawei from their national telecommunications networks, with the Trump Administration channeling the Bush one in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by strongly implying that they are “either with us or against us.”

Unlike back then, however, few countries are going along with the U.S. pressure; probably because they understand the huge difference between joining an anti-terrorist military coalition and an anti-Chinese trading one.

Building off of that observation, Huawei’s services are inexpensive and high-quality, which is the exact opposite of what the competition is providing, whether American or otherwise, and it makes sense for countries to purchase its technology in order to help them modernize their telecommunications infrastructure in preparation for the global 5G revolution.

Russia, China to Open Arctic Sea to Trade, Cutting Asia-Europe Shipping Route by 5,000 Miles

Speaking at China’s second Belt and Road conference in Beijing featuring 37 heads of state, Russia President Vladimir Putin unveiled the intention to unite Russia’s Northern Sea Route with China’s Maritime Silk Road. This announcement should come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the close strategic friendship between both countries since the 2015 announcement of an alliance between the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union and Belt and Road Initiative. This extension of the Maritime Silk Road represents a powerful force to transform the last unexplored frontier on the Earth, converting the Arctic from a geopolitical zone of conflict towards a new paradigm of mutual cooperation and development.

US Is Heading Toward a Looming Maritime Showdown… but Not With Iran

There are many indications that the United States and China are creeping towards a potential conflict in the South China Sea. When the motivations behind this war become clear the stakes become that much more serious.

While the world is drumming up a potential maritime showdown between the US and Iran (yet again), Western media is conveniently ignoring a potential looming conflict in the South China Sea, one that has been building up for years.

Lawrence Wilkerson Warns The US Is Driving Down A Highway To War With China

Former Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, who was chief of staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell in the George W. Bush administration, warns in a new The Real News interview with host Sharmini Peries that the United States government is driving down a “highway to war” with China — a war for which Wilkerson sees no sound justification.

The drive toward war is not undertaken in response to a real threat posed by China to the people of America. Instead, argues Wilkerson, the US government is moving toward war for reasons related to money for both the military and the broader military-industrial complex, as well to advance President Donald Trump’s domestic political goals.

Trump-Bolton Aggression Against Iran Contained by Russia, Japan, China, and EU

The likelihood of a U.S. war with Iran is increasing, despite alternately isolationist and provocative messages coming from Trump administration officials.

The U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln is now sitting off the coast of Iran, and the U.S. has asked its non-emergency personnel to leave nearby Iraq. Meanwhile, there is a debate about images of what the New York Times described as “missiles on small boats in the Persian Gulf that were put on board by Iranian paramilitary forces.” Whether those missiles photographed were offensive or defensive is important in determining whether the U.S. is misrepresenting Iran’s actions as threatening.

Merkel Says Postwar Order Over, Calls on Europe to Unite in Face of US

In an interview with the German daily Zueddeutche Zeitung ahead of the European elections Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Europe to unite and stand up to the US, Russia, and China. Amid the ongoing tussle with Washington over higher import tariffs and the US pulling out of the Iran deal, one of Europe’s most powerful politicians stated that “the old certainties of the postwar order no longer apply” expressing confidence that “Europe needs to reposition itself in a changed world”.

Is China's "Mandate Of Heaven" In Jeopardy?

U.S. policy through the Bush and Obama administrations was to soft-pedal questionable Chinese trade practices, pirating technology and theft of intellectual property in return for cheap manufactured goods and China’s willingness to finance trillions of dollars of U.S. government debt.

Now Trump has changed the rules of the game. He’s said lost jobs in the U.S. are not worth the cheap goods and cheap financing. He bet that China had no alternative but to keep producing those goods and keep buying our debt, even if the U.S. imposes tariffs to help create manufacturing jobs here.

President Trump and President Xi had been on a collision course involving issues of trade, tariffs, and currency manipulation, which are coming to a head.

Mystery Tanker Violates US Sanctions, Unload Iranian Fuel In China As Zarif Heads To Beijing

With Trump shutting down Huawei and China's entire telecom industry, it was only logical that China would at least try to retaliate, which it has done by formally breaching the US embargo on Iran oil exports. According to ship tracking data on Refinitiv Eikon (i.e. the old Reuters terminal), a tanker carrying Iranian fuel oil in violation of U.S. sanctions has unloaded the cargo into storage tanks near the Chinese city of Zhoushan.

A representative of the oil storage terminal confirmed that the tanker, Marshal Z, discharged nearly 130,000 tonnes of Iranian fuel oil; that marked the end of an odyssey for the cargo that began four months ago.

As Reuters reported on March 20, some Iranian fuel oil had managed to evade the United States’ sanctions on petroleum exports "by using ship-to-ship transfers involving four different ships, including the Marshal Z, and by using forged documents that masked the cargoes as originating from Iraq."

Webmaster's Commentary:

And what can President Trump do now?!?

Declare war on Iran, because it was desperate to get some of its oil sold, circumventing US sanctions before they would actually take effect?!?

I think not; in fact, President Trump has rather shown himself to be bereft of any reasoning capabilities whatsoever; if he had had them, he wouldn't have withdrawn the US from the P5+1, which, to which, according to the IAEA reports, Iran is still, largely, complying.

Asia is the region we expect to suffer most from the renewed global headwinds. We argue that policymakers in China are now going to be more accepting of USD/CNY appreciation through 7: years of regulatory measures should make outflows more manageable, easier monetary policy will add upside pressure and a weakening FX is the natural means of offsetting tariffs.

The Lunacy Of Waging A War On Iran Which China And Russia Will Win

The scare mongering about an attack on Iran continues. Bolton must be laughing his ass off how easy he can play the issue based on nothing. He simply counters any debunking of the alleged 'thread from Iran' by upping the ante. Yesterday a British general denied that any such threat exists in the area of his responsibility:

“No – there’s been no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria,” Maj. Gen. Christopher Ghika, deputy commander of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the coalition responsible for counter-terrorist operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, said in a video briefing, according to the Guardian.

Today Bolton countered that by again raising the noise level around the imaginary threat:

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq says the State Department has ordered all non-essential, non-emergency government staff to leave the country right away amid escalating tensions with Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The most intelligent thing President Trump could do right now, would be handing Bolton his hat; unfortunately, the Israeli government wants this war in the worst possible way, and seeing that they have turned Bolton so brilliantly to their casus belli (of course, filled with unsubstantiated rumors, which no one in any government can yet define), I am concerned that Trump may well take action against Iran, because he doesn't really understand the costs and consequences of moving forward with it.

China Calls For "People's War" Against The US, Vows To "Fight For A New World"

While market mood has shifted diametrically from yesterday, with stocks sharply higher on Tuesday following what has widely been interpreted as conciliatory comments from both president Trump and various members of China's ruling elite, one would be hard pressed to find any de-escalation amid the Chinese press commentaries written in the aftermath of the latest escalation in trade war between the US and China.

In a series of editorials and op-ed articles published Monday and Tuesday, Chinese state media slammed what it labeled the Trump administration's "greed and arrogance", called for a "people's war" targeting the US "with precision" as China begins a "fight for a new world."

"The most important thing is that in the China-US trade war, the US side fights for greed and arrogance ... and morale will break at any point. The Chinese side is fighting back to protect its legitimate interests," the nationalist, state-owned Global Times tabloid wrote .

'We ALWAYS win!' Trump boasts that he'll prevail over Xi in 'little squabble' as he threatens even more tariffs and tells Americans to buy products 'from someplace else other than China'

Donald Trump predicted Tuesday that the U.S. will notch a trade victory in what he described as 'a little squabble with China.'

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House, the president grinned as he asked: 'You want to know something? You want to know something? We always win.'

And Trump warned that he might stack even more tariffs on a growing pile of anti-China duties in order to put additional pressure on Beijing.

'We're looking at it very strongly,' Trump said.

'This has never happened to China before,' he said of the already painful tariff regime that shows no sign of letting up.

Wherever I look at US policy, foreign or domestic, I see only insanity, ignorance, and incompetence.

Destructive Pest Spreads to a Third of China in 4 Months

Chinese authorities recently confirmed that the fall armyworm has invaded 11 of China’s 31 provinces, destroying corn and other staple crops. They estimated on May 9 that the pest will expand to Hebei Province, Beijing, and all other regions of China by this summer.

The fall armyworm (FAW) is native to the Americas, and in its larval stage, can eat through and cause damage to crops such as corn, rice, wheat, sorghum, barley, sugarcane, cotton, soybeans, and peanuts.

There is currently no large-scale solution to get rid of the pest.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a foreign agriculture report on April 30 explaining that this crop-eating pest was first detected in China in late January, entering from nearby Burma. It does not have natural predators in China.

If China cannot stop the spread of the FAW, it may destroy this year’s harvests and threaten China’s food security.

China-US trade war heats up: 3 reasons it won’t cool down anytime soon

The truce in the U.S.-China trade war is in tatters.

China said on May 13 that it will impose new tariffs on a range of American goods in retaliation for President Donald Trump’s decision to raise duties on US$200 billion in Chinese imports.

Although trade talks may continue, for now the trade war that Trump began in January 2018 is back on, which will mean more economic pain for companies and consumers in both the U.S. and China.

As an economist who focuses on international trade, I believe there are three reasons the conflict could continue for a long time.

The be-Muellered, bothered, and bewildered American public may find US-China trade talks about as interesting as a rain delay in an Orioles-Chisox game, but the Friday collapse of negotiations may be marked by historians as the day that the global economy died. The Big Box blue-light-special orgy of bargain shopping ran about thirty years, with China exuberantly pumping out cheap consumer goods to feed the US beast-of-Mammon. Americans happily payed for it all with IOUs based on long daisy chains of previous IOUs. Tom Friedman of The New York Times said it would last forever. Alas….

The U.S. And China Will Never Return to the Ways Things Were. That World Is Over.

Today’s the first day in a long time financial markets appear willing to at least consider the reality of the geopolitical situation on the ground for what it is, as opposed to what most people would like it to be. As I’ve noted for months, the “trade war” is just one battle in a much larger, increasingly unstable struggle between the U.S. and China for global power and leverage to shape the next paradigm of world history.
