Global Warming or Global Cooling ?

Many scientists say we have global warming. They point to some exceptionally hot years and other evidence. Many climatologists are now making the case for global cooling as well. Record low temperatures and record high snowpacks the past 2 years, and decreasing solar activity appear to be their key arguments.

This article will not take sides. After reading this brief article you will have enough knowledge to decide for yourself.

Backlash For AIPAC

I'm telling ya the backlash is a coming. The arrogance of AIPAC and it's attendant Zionist lobbies is unbelievable - it is just the sort of behavior that had the leaders of organised superstition right about "pride coming before the fall". I totally recognise that it won't seem like that at the heart of empire - but the dismissal of the espionage case caused an amount of head scratching from the citizenry. That being followed so soon after by such blatant obeisance to a foreign lobby will be duly noted by the citizenry and it will come back to bite every AIPAC aligned pol on the ass sooner than most can comprehend.

'Kryptos' and Dan Brown: Inside the CIA's code of secrecy

Artist Jim Sanborn thought his 'Kryptos' cypher at the CIA headquarters would be broken within weeks. But two decades later, it still guards its text. David Usborne reports on a mystery that has frustrated the world's best crypto-geeks

Webmaster's Commentary:

This underscores something I have been telling you all for years now.

If you use one of the "accepted" encryption systems, your messages will be easy to read.

Breaking a code takes two steps. First, you need to figure out the method used, then after you have the method, you can search for the key to a specific message.

If you are using a common encryption system, such as DES or RSA, then those who would loot your private communications (like the FBI did at APEC) already have the method. Finding the key is just a matter of time and computer power, and NSA has three acres of computers to play with.

The German ENIGMA is a classic case. Until an ENIGMA machine was captured off of a U-Boat, the method was unknown and Germany's messages were secure. Once the method was derived from the captured machine, Allan Turing's "Bomb" (from the loud ticking sound it made while working) would brute-force the keys. After the war, the US and Britain made gifts of captured ENIGMA machines to "friendly" governments around the world, but never bothered to tell them the messages could be read.

Buyer's Remorse: Is it too late to swap Obama for McCain?

Anyone who has ever wasted good money on a clunker only to drop the transmission 15 minutes after leaving the car-lot, knows the feeling. It's like a swift-kick in the groin followed by weeks of fist-pounding rage. It's called buyer's remorse; "Gawd, I wish I hadn't bought that piece of dogshite!"

There are probably a lot of former-Obama supporters feeling that same agonizing sense despair now that President Rainbow has done an about-face on every campaign promise he made. So much for "truth in advertising", eh?

What a disaster. Did anyone know it was gonna be this bad?

12 Bush lawyers face disbarment complaints

A liberal activist group has filed disciplinary complaints in four states and the District of Columbia calling for the disbarment of twelve lawyers they say are associated with the Bush administration’s position on torture.

The complaints — running more than 500 pages — enumerate in excruciating detail the case against key Bush officials that participated in defending “torture techniques” employed by the administration against alleged al Qaeda suspects.

The complaints are posted online at disbartorturelawyers.com.

The Tortuous Logic of Nancy Pelosi And her defenders

The speaker of the House is in an increasingly tenuous position. Nothing less than her credibility is at stake. To have Leon Panetta directly contradict her, by issuing a statement declaring that the CIA briefed her "truthfully" and appending to that a general statement addressed to CIA agents who might have been demoralized, even angered, by Pelosi’s charges, is a real slap in the face.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Pelosi ought to be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail, BUT, she is just a side issue.

The real scandal here, and the one you need to stay focused on, is that the entire justification for the invasion of Iraq rests on a single confession extracted under torture.

Prosecutors Block Access to DNA Testing for Inmates

The laws were enacted after DNA evidence exonerated a first wave of prisoners in the early 1990s, when law enforcement authorities strongly resisted reopening old cases. Bill in Congress would ban Gun Ownership at Will

In 2007, according to the Inspector General of the FBI-administered Terrorist Screening Center, there were well over 700,000 names on the no-fly database and the list was growing at an astronomical rate of 20,000 records per month. That means the list now contains more than a million people. Senator Ted Kennedy, Rep. John Lewis, and former Senator Ted Steven’s wife, Catherine Stevens are on the list.

According to Rahm Emanuel, now Obama’s Chief of Staff, every last one of them are terrorists who will have their Second Amendment right to own a firearm stripped.

Marijuana Chemical May Fight Brain Cancer

The active chemical in marijuana promotes the death of brain cancer cells by essentially helping them feed upon themselves, researchers in Spain report.

Guillermo Velasco and colleagues at Complutense University in Spain have found that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, causes brain cancer cells to undergo a process called autophagy. Autophagy is the breakdown of a cell that occurs when the cell essentially self-digests.

The team discovered that cannabinoids such as THC had anticancer effects in mice with human brain cancer cells and people with brain tumors. When mice with the human brain cancer cells received the THC, the tumor growth shrank.

Fury as Hanworth speed camera rakes in £1m

A TEMPORARY speed camera in Hanworth has been named as Britain's highest-grossing – bringing in fines of almost £1m in just six months.

16,213 motorists – which equates to more than 100 a day – were caught breaking the temporary 30mph restriction imposed on the A316 Country Way between June and November last year.

The road usually has a 50mph limit but average speed cameras were operating during roadworks at the site to improve signage, street lighting and resurface the road.

The 30mph restriction has been criticised by motorists who say the limit was too drastic a slowdown just a few hundred metres after coming off the busy 70mph M3 motorway.

I share my constituents’ concerns. My own claims have always been made according to the advice of the House of Commons administration.”

MPs' expenses: John Austin claims £35,000 for flats 11 miles from home

John Austin, a Labour MP, claimed more than £10,000 in expenses for the redecoration of his London flat, which was 11 miles from his main home, before selling it for a profit.

He made £30,000 on the sale and then bought a new flat 1.5 miles away, claiming £10,000 in stamp duty and charges incurred during the move, and a further £15,000 on a new bathroom, kitchen, carpets and appliances.

Mr Austin, the MP for Erith and Thamesmead, is retiring at the next election. His claims represent one of the clearest cases so far of an MP profiting by “flipping” their expenses claims to a new second home.

U.S. Stirs a Hornet's Nest in Pakistan

Pakistan finally bowed to Washington's angry demands last week by unleashing its military against rebellious Pashtun tribesmen of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) -- collectively mislabelled "Taliban" in the West.

The Obama administration had threatened to stop $2 billion US annual cash payments to bankrupt Pakistan's political and military leadership and block $6.5 billion future aid, unless Islamabad sent its soldiers into Pakistan's turbulent NWFP along the Afghan frontier.

The result was a bloodbath: Some 1,000 "terrorists" killed (read: mostly civilians) and 1.2 million people -- most of Swat's population -- made refugees.

Bringing the war back home ...

BEFORE HE went on the rampage, John Russell was showing such obvious signs of combat-related stress that he should have been sent home from Iraq, according to military mental health professionals. The army sergeant, who killed five fellow soldiers at a clinic at Camp Liberty in Baghdad on Monday, was nearing the end of his third tour of duty. That he was still in a war zone despite his superiors knowing he was a threat to himself and others is a symptom of the institutional pressure to keep damaged men fighting.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The multiple deployments and stop-loss orders are taking their toll, and intelligent people understand this.

But the pressure the military feels to prevent people like Russell from leaving a war theatre, knowing full well that he should not be there (fingers crossed that he wouldn't unravel emotionally until he left active duty status), is very clear evidence that US's military misadventures have stressed many of our troops to well beyond the breaking point.

In order to achieve Obama's muscular, militarily-enforced foreign policy objectives, we may well see the re-institution of the draft on Obama's watch.

I wouldn't bet against that, at this point.

Giving Some Love to the Inquisition

Beyond the inhumanity of the Inquisition, there is the troubling fact that the torture tactics did "work" only in the sense that they extracted many false confessions and got victims to implicate other individuals who were, in turn, persecuted, tortured and put to death for their religious beliefs.

But Graham's praise for the efficacy of the Inquisition's torture tactics passed largely unnoticed -- and without any perceptible criticism -- in the American news media. The Washington Post article on the Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing didn't even mention Graham's extraordinary remark; a brief New York Times article about the hearing mentioned it only in passing.

Webmaster's Commentary:

OF COURSE, Graham would favor torture tactics, because it got Bush and Cheney precisely what they wanted; confessions to lies, based on torture, with which to "sell" the American people the war in Iraq.

And I am still pretty amazed at how quietly many Americans seem to be taking this news, when it has pretty much been smeared all over their faces, through recent revelations on the torture scandals.

So who's the "war criminal" now, huh? The man with his hand on the throttle of a voracious war machine killing actual innocent human beings right now in reality -- or all of the stupid, crap-peddling, poo-flinging critics who are blithely unconcerned about the "possible deaths of millions of civilians" under far-fetched fantasies spun from Dick Cheney's paranoiac "One Percent Doctrine", now adapted to the righteous progressive cause?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable, but this is precisely what has happened, courtesy of the Obamamanics who steadfastly affirm that this President is incapable of doing anything wrong.

The most depressing news concerns the split between the Palestinians themselves. This split is a disaster for them, and, I believe, also for Israel and the world at large. That’s why I dare to comment on a matter that seemingly does not concern us Israelis. It does.

It is easy to blame Israel. Easy and also justified. In their struggle against the national aspirations of the Palestinians, successive Israeli governments have applied the old Roman maxim divide et impera, divide and rule.

Deputy FM: Assad just wants peace process, not peace

Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad was only interested in conducting a peace process with Israel, instead of actually reaching a peace accord.

"The Syrian President fully realizes that the price of peace would be opening up to the West, which is a threat to the stability of his regime," said Ayalon during a lecture in Be'er Sheva.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Syria's alliance with Iran has been due to self-preservation, and a serious sense that the US and Israel cannot be trusted to keep their word.

And the really interesting "kicker" in the equation is the very real possibility that next month's election in Lebanon may well see Shiite Hezbollah candidates increase their influence in Lebanon's government, extending both Iran and Syria's regional sphere of influence.

If there is a sincere desire for peace in the region, both Israel - and the US - will need to offer far more carrots than sticks to Syria to begin any kind of serious rapprochement here.

"It would be completely insane to attack Iran," ElBaradei told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. "That would turn the region into one big fireball, and the Iranians would immediately start building the bomb - and they could count on the support of the entire Islamic world."

Webmaster's Commentary:

But the liberals who helped propel him to the White House are dismayed. Did we work so hard, they ask, merely to put another George W Bush in the Oval Office? Their suspicions will only have been increased by Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. Even as America's commitment in Iraq is about to wind down, its new leader seems to be plunging deeper into another unwinnable war.

In the process, campaign promises are being torn up.

No Waterboarding Used in Questioning On Al-Qaeda Ties to Iraq, Officials Say

Senior intelligence officials yesterday acknowledged that two al-Qaeda operatives, Abu Zubaida and Khalid Sheik Mohammed, had been questioned about alleged links between al-Qaeda and Iraq when the two men underwent CIA interrogation in 2002 and 2003. But the officials denied that the questioning on Iraq had included waterboarding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

....As though waterboarding was the only trick in the torturers' tool-chest!

Mass Media just a giant Ziabatsu

Why are the News Networks so uniform? Why are they so synchronized in their propaganda that they do the same daily reports often in the same order with the same catch phrases? Because they all work for the same masters.

The U.S. to Raise Military Aid to Israel

According to the Israeli daily, Haaretz, the budget proposed to Congress for 2010 includes $2.775 billion in aid to Israel, compared to $2.5 billon budgeted for 2009. This is more than a 10% increase in total U.S. aid to Israel.

The budget also includes an increase in the assistance to the production of weapons systems, such as the missile Hetz-3.

Obama courts Israel with pact against Tehran

PRESIDENT Barack Obama hopes to tempt Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli leader, into making concessions to the Palestinians by holding out the prospect of a “grand alliance” of moderate Arab states against a nuclear Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The economic climate in this country is an absolute and complete meltdown, with no real end in sight.

There are those in Washington who are counting on a war (any war) as the only antidote. And were I a betting person, I wouldn't bet against the reinstitution of the draft in Obama's first term.

What we will see from the Washington meeting between Netanyahu and Obama will be completely superficial; the real deal-making has nothing to do with a "grand alliance" against Iran.

We may well see some kind of staged event in the US to be blamed on Iran(whose political leadership know it would be suicide to do such a thing), and we're off and running, attempting to "neutralize" another of Israel's existential threats - just like Iraq was supposed to be.

Mapping an Occupation

Webmaster's Commentary:

Scroll the map up to the area between Ramallah (North of Jerusalem) and Qalqilya (further north). Click on the box "Completed barrier." Now click the box just underneath "Under Construction".

Israel is already building a SECOND wall clearly designed to steal even more Palestinian lands.

May 17 09:14

Israel must leave Palestinian lands

The only question that Obama should ask Netanyahu is: When will Israel quit the occupied Palestinian territories? Attempts at obfuscation - whether by talking about an "economic peace" or insisting that Arabs recognize the Jewishness of the state of Israel - should not be allowed to derail the goal of ending the inadmissible occupation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem with Israel's demands that Palestine recognize the Jewish state is that the Jewish state won't say where they think their borders are.

Palestine cannot recognize the Jewish state because they do not know what it is they agree to.

Obama Can’t Turn the Page on Bush

TO paraphrase Al Pacino in “Godfather III,” just when we thought we were out, the Bush mob keeps pulling us back in. And will keep doing so. No matter how hard President Obama tries to turn the page on the previous administration, he can’t. Until there is true transparency and true accountability, revelations of that unresolved eight-year nightmare will keep raining down drip by drip, disrupting the new administration’s high ambitions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If President Bush had the power to pull this nation off of its Constitutional track. then Obama has the power to put it back.

QED Obama's refusal to prosecute for torture and war crimes is by intent, not by circumstance.

The Case of the Missing H-Bomb: The Pentagon Has Lost the Mother of All Weapons

Things go missing. It's to be expected. Even at the Pentagon. Last October, the Pentagon's inspector general reported that the military's accountants had misplaced a destroyer, several tanks and armored personnel carriers, hundreds of machine guns, rounds of ammo, grenade launchers and some surface-to-air missiles. In all, nearly $8 billion in weapons were AWOL.

Those anomalies are bad enough. But what's truly chilling is the fact that the Pentagon has lost track of the mother of all weapons, a hydrogen bomb. The thermonuclear weapon, designed to incinerate Moscow, has been sitting somewhere off the coast of Savannah, Georgia for the past 40 years. The Air Force has gone to greater lengths to conceal the mishap than to locate the bomb and secure it.

U.S. Special Forces Sent to Train Pakistanis

Senior U.S. officials said 25 to 50 Special Forces personnel are deploying to two new training camps in Baluchistan, a Taliban stronghold on the porous Afghan-Pakistani border. The deployment brings U.S. personnel deeper than before into tribal regions of Pakistan, which the Obama administration views as among the world's most-dangerous flashpoints.

New script outstrips all other drive-by download risks

A newly-created malicious script has become the source of almost half the drive-by download attacks tracked by one security firm.

JSRedir-R accounts for around 43 per cent of all malicious infections found on websites over the last week, according to a study by net security firm Sophos, published on Thursday. The malware crops up with almost six times the frequency of its nearest rival, iFrame-F (which is recorded in seven per cent of attacks).

The JSRedir-R script is typically found on legitimate websites, hidden behind obfuscated JavaScript, and used to exploit browser vulnerabilities to download malware onto the Windows PCs of visiting surfers via third-party websites under the control of hackers.

Bailed-out bank directors hit the pensions jackpot

More than 20 former bank directors are benefiting from staggering retirement plans, with actual or potential pension pots worth a combined total of more than £111m. These are paying out yearly pensions of £6,430,000 between them.

The findings are part of a damning new exposé of some of Britain's top bankers to be broadcast on Channel 4's Dispatches programme tomorrow.

The select group of wealthy bankers will remain unaffected by the economic catastrophe facing millions of Britons. Many have already been able to give up work years ahead of state retirement age.

Britain seethes over lawmakers' expenses

Forget the fat-cat bankers with their million-dollar pensions. The people who have even the most reserved of Brits spluttering with outrage these days are the politicians who ordered the moats on their country estates cleaned and who bought hundreds of sacks of horse manure (presumably for gardening purposes) -- and tried to charge taxpayers for it.

MPs' expenses: shoot them or jail them – public is after revenge

It was fortunate that Andrew MacKay did not encounter one of his elderly constituents when the Conservative MP defied growing public fury to show his face in Bracknell town centre yesterday.

"I can see ordinary people going round with shotguns and shooting them all," said a pensioner in this industrious Berkshire town. She was so enraged by MPs' expenses, she said, that she was tempted to shoot the Speaker herself.

The days when Dick Turpin reputedly rested up in a pub where this new town now sprawls have long gone. But voters outside Westminster are increasingly convinced that their representatives have got away with daylight robbery.

The week Britain turned its anger on politicians

The stream of revelations, recriminations and resignations over MPs' expenses has not only wrecked careers and ruined reputations; it has also threatened the legitimacy of mainstream parties to offer themselves for government. Among ministers, there is a now genuine fear of a rerun of the poll tax riots

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hitler’s freedom from International Debt Slavery

Many people take joy in saying Wall Street and Jewish bankers “financed Hitler.” There is plenty of documented evidence that Wall Street and Jewish bankers did indeed help finance Hitler at first, partly because it allowed the bankers to get rich (as I will describe below) and partly in order to control Stalin. However, when Germany broke free from the bankers, the bankers declared a world war against Germany.

One government official was disturbed enough by these biblically seasoned sheets to hold on to copies, which I obtained recently while debriefing the past eight years with those who lived them inside the West Wing and the Pentagon. Over the past several months, the battle to define the Bush years has begun taking shape: As President Obama has rolled back his predecessor’s foreign and economic policies, Dick Cheney, Ari Fleischer, and former speechwriters Michael Gerson and Marc Thiessen have all taken to the airwaves or op-ed pages to cast the Bush years in a softer light.

Astronauts Watch Star Trek Movie From Space

NASA officials fulfilled the wishes of a Star Trek fan who didn’t want to miss the premiere because of his space journey. They beamed the movie to the International Space Station. Three astronauts enjoyed the special preview of the movie at the station.

US astronaut Michael Barratt requested this movie before he boarded the space shuttle in March. He told NASA officials that he was a big fan of the Star Trek TV series and didn’t want to miss J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

NASA officials agreed and reformatted the movie so that the astronauts at the station can watch it on their laptop. NASA beamed the movie to the station on Friday morning.

Transparency: The Death Penalty Around the World

Last week, Michael Rosales, who murdered 67-year-old Mary Felder in 1997, became the thirteenth person executed this year—in Texas. Whether or not you believe in the death penalty, it’s important to know that the United States is one of 59 countries that still executes its citizens on a regular basis (we currently have more than 3,000 inmates on death row). Our latest Transparency is a look at where, around the world, the death penalty is still used and where it has been abolished.

Obama Can’t Turn the Page on Bush

That’s why the president’s flip-flop on the release of detainee abuse photos — whatever his motivation — is a fool’s errand. The pictures will eventually emerge anyway, either because of leaks (if they haven’t started already) or because the federal appeals court decision upholding their release remains in force. And here’s a bet: These images will not prove the most shocking evidence of Bush administration sins still to come.

As Smash-and-Grab Capitalism Collapses, the French Economy Shines

The classic English and Scottish economists (Adam Smith, David Ricardo, etc.) believed that a business enterprise was an agent of social benefit, in that it created goods and wealth, but also had obligations to its workforce and society as a whole. The same values are responsible for the “French model,” and are now demonstrating that they can succeed in bad times as well as good.
