Facebook’s name change is not enough to fix its reputation

Is Mark Zuckerberg hitting the panic button by changing Facebook’s name, as is widely expected? Probably. Will it work? Depends.

Facebook is building a “metaverse”—a term coined by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson, referring to a virtual world people escape to from a dystopian, real world. The Silicon Valley giant is hiring more than 10,000 people in Europe to realize this vision of an online reality where people can meet, play games, work, and more.

As it designs this ecosystem beyond social media, Facebook wants a new name that captures its growing ambitions, the Verge reported last week.

‘Carol’s Journey’: What Facebook knew about how it radicalized users

In summer 2019, a new Facebook user named Carol Smith signed up for the platform, describing herself as a politically conservative mother from Wilmington, North Carolina. Smith’s account indicated an interest in politics, parenting and Christianity and followed a few of her favorite brands, including Fox News and then-President Donald Trump.

Though Smith had never expressed interest in conspiracy theories, in just two days Facebook was recommending she join groups dedicated to QAnon, a sprawling and baseless conspiracy theory and movement that claimed Trump was secretly saving the world from a cabal of pedophiles and Satanists.

Smith didn’t follow the recommended QAnon groups, but whatever algorithm Facebook was using to determine how she should engage with the platform pushed ahead just the same. Within one week, Smith’s feed was full of groups and pages that had violated Facebook’s own rules, including those against hate speech and disinformation.

Greenwald: Pierre Omidyar's Financing Of The Facebook "Whistleblower" Campaign Reveals A Great Deal

It is completely unsurprising to learn, as Politico reported last Wednesday, that the major financial supporter of Facebook "whistleblower” Frances Haugen's sprawling P.R. and legal network coordinating her public campaign is the billionaire founder of EBay, Pierre Omidyar. The Haugen Show continues today as a consortium of carefully-cultivated news outlets (including those who have been most devoted to agitating for online censorship: the New York Times’ "tech” unit and NBC News's “disinformation” team) began publishing the trove of archives she took from Facebook under the self-important title "The Facebook Papers,” while the star herself has traveled to London to testify today to British lawmakers considering a bill to criminally punish tech companies that allow “foul content” or “extremism” — whatever that means — to be published.

JOE ROGAN CALLS DON LEMON A ‘DUMB MOTHERF—ER’ FOR CONTINUING ‘HORSE DE-WORMER’ SMEAR

During another instalment of his podcast last week, Joe Rogan continued to expose CNN for refusing to back down on spreading lies about his use of Ivermectin to treat COVID-19, calling CNN host Don Lemon a “dumb motherfucker.”

After the network issued a statement declaring that “The only thing CNN did wrong here was bruise the ego of a popular podcaster who pushed dangerous conspiracy theories and risked the lives of millions of people in doing so,” Rogan fired back.

“This is what’s so funny about that. They don’t understand that when they say things that are absolutely untrue, it diminishes their authority. They’re not even aware of what they’re doing,” Rogan declared.

He continued, “When Don Lemon goes on with Sanjay Gupta and says, ‘Actually, it really is a veterinary medicine. It really is horse dewormer.’”

Deathly Silence: Journalists Who Mocked Assange Have Nothing to Say About CIA Plans to Kill Him

Yahoo! News (9/26/21) published a bombshell report detailing the US Central Intelligence Agency’s “secret war plans against WikiLeaks,” including clandestine plots to kill or kidnap publisher Julian Assange while he took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Following WikiLeaks‘ publication of the Vault 7 files in 2017—the largest leak in CIA history, which exposed how US and UK intelligence agencies could hack into household devices—the US government designated WikiLeaks as a “non-state hostile intelligence service” (The Hill, 4/13/17), providing legal cover to target the organization as if it were an adversarial spy agency.

Revealed: Facebook Admits To BLOCKING Conservative News

Facebook’s prejudice is visible once again. The tech giant’s workers have consistently struggled to contain or de-platform right-wing outlets such as Breitbart, despite complaints from managers attempting to evade political consequences, a brutal report revealed by the Wall Street Journal.

The internal discussions— taken in message-board conversations reviewed by the publication — fuel new interests that the platform treats news outlets differently based on a political slant.

Breitbart was one of the publications they have tried to remove from the News Tab function, especially amid protests following George Floyd’s death by Minneapolis police last year.

Report: ‘The View’ Turns On ‘Hero Nurse’ After False Positive COVID Tests Spoil Kamala Harris Interview

According to reports, ABC’s far-left morning talk show, The View, has dumped the in-house nurse they once called a “hero” after the coronavirus testing mess that occurred during the show’s Kamala Harris interview in September.

According to The Daily Beast, ABC and The View producers have removed “health and safety manager” Wendy Livingston from her celebrated position on the show.

The show and its hosts once called “Nurse Wendy” their “healthcare hero,” but now it appears that she has gone from hero to zero — after hosts Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin were hastily removed from the set in the middle of the show on Sept. 24 due to positive tests for the coronavirus. Their removal occurred only minutes before Vice President Kamala Harris was supposed to waltz out onto the set for an interview.

Harris did perform her interview that day but did so via a video remote link from another room in the studio.

Employees pleaded with Facebook to stop letting politicians bend rules

Facebook’s senior executives interfered to allow US politicians and celebrities to post whatever they wanted on its social network despite pleas from employees to stop, leaked internal documents suggest.

Employees claim in the documents that while Facebook has long insisted that it is politically neutral, it allowed rightwing figures to break rules designed to curb misinformation and harmful content, after being stung by accusations of bias from conservatives.

In September 2020, just ahead of the US presidential election, the author of an internal memo wrote that “director-level employees” had “written internally that they would prefer to formally exclude political considerations from the decision-making process.”

The author called for the company’s leadership to create a “firewall” around its content moderation teams to stop this from happening and to make sure Facebook did not keep up or take down posts because of external political and media pressure.

FACEBOOK ANNOUNCES CREEPY NEW AI CENSORSHIP FOR GROUPS

If you're tired of censorship, cancel culture, and the erosion of civil liberties subscribe to Reclaim The Net.

Facebook seems to be attempting to respond to the most recent round of criticism against it and deflect from it by “doing more” with an announcement that new censorship measures are on its way.

This time they concern groups, whose members’ posts will be demoted if Facebook determines that they had violated its guidelines in other places on the giant network – meaning that their group-posted content can still be in line with Facebook’s rules, without having broken any. The downranking will apply to all content posted by these users in a group.

An Imperial Saint? Deification of Colin Powell Reflects Sad State of Mainstream Media

Colin Powell is dead. The 84-year-old former Secretary of State, former National Security Advisor, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff succumbed to Covid-19 while battling multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow.

Predictably, the mainstream media self-flagellated over the loss of this “hero-statesman.”

The Washington Post published an editorial about how the current Republican party is no longer the party of Colin Powell. (It never was.) Another Post op-ed said that Americans just don’t trust anybody today the way they trusted Powell. Yet another lamented the fact that he had not run for President against Bill Clinton in 1996.

Just imagine it, the Washington swells said: Powell in 1996 would have meant no impeachment, which would have neutered Newt Gingrich. It would have meant no 2000 Florida recount, no Cheney as Vice President, and no Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense.

EXPOSED: Facebook Used As Tool To Spread Hatred For Religion

Internal Facebook documents showed that while the company enjoyed a surge of popularity in India in 2019, researchers were warning that the company's services were filled with religious hate speech between the nation's Hindu and Muslim populations.

In 2019 researchers monitored a test account from February to March that quickly became awash with bigotry, misinformation and celebrations of violence that one report would eventually link to the deadly February 2020 religious riots in Delhi that killed 53 people, The Washington Post reports.

"The test user's News Feed has become a near constant barrage of polarizing nationalist content, misinformation, and violence and gore," one Facebook researcher wrote in the report.

"I've seen more images of dead people in the past three weeks than I've seen in my entire life total."

Report: Facebook Suppressed Breitbart News Traffic by Twenty Percent

The Wall Street Journal has published internal material from anonymous sources at Facebook revealing that the company introduced tools that suppressed the traffic of Breitbart News by 20 percent, and other conservative publishers by double-digit margins.

The company introduced two tools after the 2016 election that disproportionately harmed conservative publishers. The Journal highlights internal Facebook research showing that if both tools were removed, it would increase traffic to Breitbart News by 20 percent, the Washington Times by 18 percent, Western Journal by 16 percent, and the Epoch Times by 11 percent. Facebook eventually removed one of the tools while keeping the other — but it is unclear which of them had the most impact on traffic.

According to the Wall Street Journal, one of Facebook’s researchers feared, “We could face significant backlash for having ‘experimented’ with distribution at the expense of conservative publishers.”

Federal Judge Allows Texas to Seek Internal Documents from Facebook, Twitter and Google Regarding How They Censor Conservatives

A federal judge will allow Texas to seek internal documents from social-media companies regarding how they moderate content, as the state defends a new law restricting when platforms can suspend users.

The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin means Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is free to seek limited discovery from members of two prominent trade groups that sued to block the controversial statute, including Twitter Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, and Facebook Inc.

The ruling allows Paxton to seek documents and depose employees at members of NetChoice and Computer & Communications Industry Association — but only if they’ll be impacted by the law barring platforms from suspending users over their political views. The statute, which applies to social-media companies with more than 50 million monthly users, takes effect December 2.

Facebook’s Internal Chat Boards Show Politics Often at Center of Decision Making

In June 2020, when America was rocked by protests over the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, a Facebook employee posted a message on the company’s racial-justice chat board: “Get Breitbart out of News Tab.”

News Tab is a feature that aggregates and promotes articles from various publishers, chosen by Facebook. The employee’s message included screenshots of headlines on Breitbart’s website, such as “Minneapolis Mayhem: Riots in Masks,” “Massive Looting, Buildings in Flames, Bonfires!” and “BLM Protesters Pummel Police Cars on 101.”

The employee said they were “emblematic of a concerted effort at Breitbart and similarly hyperpartisan sources (none of which belong in News Tab) to paint Black Americans and Black-led movements in a very negative way,” according to written conversations on Facebook’s office communication system reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Many other employees chimed in to agree.

MSM IS REALLY TURNING UP THE PROPAGANDA: VACCINATED DYING FROM COVID MEANS VACCINES WORK!

The mainstream media, the ruling class’s puppets, are literally attempting to convince people that when a fully vaccinated person dies of COVID-19 after getting the vaccine, that doesn’t mean the vaccine was ineffective. But that’s literally the definition of the word “ineffective.”

Unless the “effect” is not supposed to be what they tell us it is, people dying from COVID after being fully vaccinated against it is the literal definition of “ineffective.” Ineffective, adjective: not producing an intended effect.

These propagandists want you to descend into a brainwashed hellscape of which there is no escape and permanently disable any logical thought processes and critical thinking. They are asking you to exchange your logic for obedience, compliance, and just do what they say even though it literally makes no sense. Check out the headline from the Communist News Network (CNN):

US Seals Agreement To End European Digital Taxes

The United States has resolved a key point of trade friction with Europe after inking a deal to end controversial digital services taxes on American tech giants.

Washington said Thursday it will remove punitive tariffs on products from Austria, France, Italy, Spain and Britain as part of the deal -- a critical step in improving frayed relations even though the duties were never imposed.

Under the joint agreement, those countries will end taxes on Big Tech companies once a global minimum corporate tax deal takes effect, which is expected in 2023.

Any levies paid for the DSTs in the interim will be credited to future tax bills, according to the deal.

The FDA's War Against The Truth On Ivermectin

On July 28, the Wall Street Journal ran our article “Why Is the FDA Attacking a Safe, Effective Drug?”

In it, we outlined the potential value of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin for Covid-19, and we questioned the FDA’s vigorous attack on ivermectin. Many people praised us and many criticized us. We had clearly covered a sensitive subject. It didn’t help that one of the studies we referenced was retracted the day our article was published. Within hours of learning that fact, we sent a mea culpa to the Journal’s editors. They acted quickly, adding a note at the end of the electronic version and publishing our letter. It’s important to address two criticisms of our work. The first is that we exaggerated the FDA’s warning on ivermectin. The second is that Merck’s stance on ivermectin proved that even the company that developed ivermectin thought that it doesn’t work for Covid-19.

First, we didn’t exaggerate the FDA’s warning on ivermectin.

Putin: Attempts by tech platforms to usurp political or state functions were short-lived, they’ve been put in their place

‘Global digital platforms’ are unable to ‘usurp’ any government functions despite all of their might, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the Valdai forum amid political scandals surrounding companies like Facebook and Google.

Big Tech has sought to acquire some functions rivaling those of governments, the Russian leader said, adding that such attempts were “fleeting.” Still, with all the power the companies have accumulated over the years, they remain unable to compete with the state authorities in this field, he believes.

“In the US, the owners of these platforms were taken down a peg or two as it was in Europe as well,” he told the forum, referring to what he called “de-monopolization measures.”

UN draft calls for labeling social media users who have made “misogynistic” comments

The BBC has come up with a new job title – specialist disinformation reporter – and a lengthy article penned by this employee of Britain’s public broadcaster goes into how to stop abuse and threats online, especially where those target women.

In order to “investigate” how serious the problem is and how far it reaches, a film was produced for BBC’s Panorama program, while a new study is quoted as showing that women are more likely to receive abusive messages online.

The premise is that this type of abuse is increasing on the internet, that it often coincides with racism and homophobia – and that governments, the police, and tech companies behind social media sites need to protect women, who are apparently considered less capable of coping on their own than other internet users, and therefore require extra action taken from the outside to feel and be safe online.

Silicon Valley is working more and more openly in conjunction with the US government, and its algorithms elevate empire-authorized narratives while hiding unapproved ones with increasing brazenness.

Facebook reportedly planning name change to shake off scandal

Facebook is reportedly planning to change its company name as soon as next week in an effort to distance itself from recent scandals and align itself more closely with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent obsession with the “metaverse.”

Facebook’s app and website would be unchanged, the Verge reported, but the parent company will rebrand in a similar structure to that of Alphabet, which is the holding company behind Google and the firm’s lesser-known ventures.

Zuckerberg plans to talk about the new name at the company’s annual Connect conference on Oct. 28, but it could be announced sooner, the outlet reported, citing a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

The new name will reportedly reflect the company’s efforts to expand beyond social media — a business that has become increasingly plagued by critics and scandals in recent year.

Russia to fine Google up to 20% of annual turnover for failing to delete banned content

Fallon has served as public relations guru for prominent Democrats including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), former attorney general Eric Holder, and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Fallon was responding to the journalistic controversy surrounding ESPN's Adam Schefter. The reporter was being criticized after emails revealed Schefter had let an NFL executive review his story on the league's 2011 lockout prior to publication.

"Please let me know if you see anything that should be added, changed, tweaked," Schefter wrote to Bruce Allen, the then general manager of the then Washington Redskins. "Thanks, Mr. Editor, for that and the trust. Plan to file this to ESPN about 6 a.m."

FACT CHECK: The FDA first approved ivermectin for HUMANS back in 1996… media outlets are deliberately lying to the public

The mainstream media is lying on behalf of Big Pharma and the medical fascists by falsely claiming that ivermectin is a de-wormer for animals, when the reality is that the anti-parasite drug was first approved for human use back in 1996.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is really a private corporation posing as a public health agency, ivermectin should not be used by humans because it is intended for animals. A quick and easy fact check reveals this claim to be patently false.

The fact of the matter is that while ivermectin is, in fact, used in animals, it is also approved for use in humans. The only reason that many people are having to take the animal version these days is because the governing authorities have made it next to impossible to obtain a prescription for human ivermectin, while animal ivermectin is freely available in feed stores and online.

George Galloway: Facebook is fighting to the death to stop those with the ‘wrong’ opinions from being heard

How convenient that Facebook ‘whistleblowers’ are emerging at exactly the same time as the social media giant is seeking to “reduce the presence of politics” on the site. What this means for freedom of speech is glaringly obvious.

If you had told me during the years I sat with Nick Clegg in the British Parliament that the achingly liberal member for Sheffield Hallam – later to become deputy prime minister of the UK and Sir Nick – would become chief censor of the biggest public square on the planet, Facebook, I would never have believed it.

In the 2010 general election, when Clegg got the Liberal Democrats off to a flying start in the televised debates, “I agree with Nick” became the catchphrase of his trailing opponents. What began as an expedient has now become compulsory.

Debunked: The MPs’ Covid ‘report’

IF THE British mainstream media of the mid-2000s were as unquestioning as the current set, they would have concluded that the Iraq War was a disaster because the UK failed to invade a week earlier.

Yes, that dreaded report on the British coronavirus response is finally here. Inaccurately called ‘Lessons Learnt,’ the 150-page document predictably concludes that the official Covid-19 death toll would have been lower if only the Johnson government had locked down a week earlier. Sigh.

Even more predictably, the MSM swallowed every word of it, then got to work grilling ministers for all the wrong reasons. Their idea of balance is allowing one establishment mouthpiece to deride the execution of a policy, while another establishment mouthpiece defends its execution. No one challenges the policy itself.

Taibbi: Yes, Virginia, There Is A Deep State

On The Young Turks the other night, during a segment called — this is not a joke — “RebelHQ,” commentator Ben Carollo extolled the virtues of the CIA. In one section, he described how intelligence officials responded to “Donald Trump trying to plan some ridiculous scheme to maintain himself as president”:

It’s not a conspiracy theory to say that these government officials wanted to listen to congress and cared about Democratic norms and respected the constitutional structure of the way the United States is today.

When I first heard Carollo talking about the desire of intelligence officials to “listen to congress,” I thought he was being literal.

Facebook users allowed to share advice, tips on crossing border illegally

Facebook has acknowledged it allows people to share information on how to immigrate illegally or be smuggled into the U.S., saying it crafted the policy to give them a shot at asylum and prevent them from relying on human traffickers.

The company made the admission in a private letter to Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich. Mr. Brnovich was stunned by the revelation and wrote a letter late last week to the Justice Department. He asked U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to open an investigation into the social media giant and find a way to “stop its active encouragement and facilitation of illegal entry.”

“Facebook’s policy of allowing posts promoting human smuggling and illegal entry into the United States to regularly reach its billions of users seriously undermines the rule of law,” Mr. Brnovich wrote. “The company is a direct facilitator, and thus exacerbates, the catastrophe occurring at Arizona’s southern border.”

MAN SENTENCED TO 15 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR A STUPID FACEBOOK POST

In April 2020, a Texas man named Christopher Charles Perez posted on Facebook that he had paid someone with COVID-19 to go to a local grocery store, and lick items.
That was a really dumb thing to post, especially so early in the pandemic when it was still unclear how serious COVID-19 was.

The post was immature and idiotic, but was it criminal?

Some anonymous netizen thought so, and sent a screen-shot of the post to the Southwest Texas Fusion Center, which facilitates information sharing among multiple local, state, and federal police agencies.

From there, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, along with Weapons of Mass Destruction personnel, conducted an investigation.

Big shocker— the post was false. Perez had not, in fact, paid anyone with COVID to lick items at the local grocery store.

But he was charged with spreading a hoax relating to biological weapons, convicted, and now has been sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Facebook Changes Rules to Make Journalists A Protected Class

Facebook has changed its rules to make journalists a protected class shielded from "bullying" and "harassment" (aka criticism), according to a report from Reuters.

From Reuters, "EXCLUSIVE Facebook to change rules on attacking public figures on its platform":
Facebook Inc will now count activists and journalists as "involuntary" public figures and so increase protections against harassment and bullying targeted at these groups, its global safety chief said in an interview this week.

The social media company, which allows more critical commentary of public figures than of private individuals, is changing its approach on the harassment of journalists and "human rights defenders," who it says are in the public eye due to their work rather than their public personas.

This means journos can smear people all over the media and then be shielded from criticism -- which they call "bullying" and "harassment."

Pressure Mounts on CNN to Disclose Business Relationship with UAE

A new report from Responsible Statecraft’s Eli Clifton and a pressure campaign from a collection of activist groups has put CNN’s sycophantic coverage of the UAE in the spotlight as the media outlet prepares to be “the official broadcaster for Expo 2020 Dubai” set to kick off hours from now.

Clifton, following reporting from The Column documenting CNN’s PR fluff for the UAE, reached out to CNN to request comment on any potential partnership with the Gulf monarchy. “CNN did not respond to the questions,” Clifton reports.

Despite the outlet’s silence, as Clifton lays out, “production and distribution of sponsored content for clients in Dubai falls under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, a statute requiring registration for entities within the United States serving ‘as a foreign principal’s public relations counsel, publicity agent, information-service employee, or political consultant.’”

Tech's Big Bad Morale Problem

The rank-and-file runs the tech industry now. If you want to boil down many of the events of the last weeks and months, one thing that unites them all is that employees at tech companies are flexing their individual and collective power more than ever. Even a vocal minority has more ways than ever to make noise and press for change. And instead of worrying about public opinion and business ramifications, bosses are increasingly worried about employee morale above all else.

Facebook is the most obvious example. The company's increasingly aggressive public stance, pushing back on whistleblower testimony and news stories, is less about changing public opinion and more about getting the team back on track.

Missouri governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website

On Tuesday, a reporter with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch alerted the state that Social Security numbers of school teachers and administrators were vulnerable to public exposure due to flaws on a website maintained by Missouri’s department of education.

The newspaper agreed to hold off publishing any story while the department fixed the problem and protected the private information of teachers around the state.

But by Thursday, Gov. Mike Parson was labeling the Post-Dispatch reporter a “hacker” and vowing to seek criminal prosecution.

“The state does not take this matter lightly,” Parson said Thursday at a hastily called press conference. He refused to take questions afterward.

Parson said he had referred the matter to the Cole County Prosecutor and has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to investigate.

Trump Takes On Social Media App For Impersonating Him

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly lashed at a social media company with a cease-and-desist letter for deceiving its users into believing he is using its platform.

Social media app 2nd1st, which uses Trump's likeness to suggest he's using its platform to post, seems to have a conservative user base and calls itself a space for "uncensored news and chat."

It's Official: Facebook's Fortune Funded Biden's 2020 Victory

Throughout the 2020 election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent hundreds of millions of dollars to turn out likely Democratic voters. Yet this wasn’t traditional political spending. Instead, he funded a targeted, private takeover of government election operations by nominally nonpartisan — yet demonstrably ideological — nonprofit organizations.

Analysis carried by The Post demonstrates this money significantly improved Joe Biden’s vote margin in crucial swing states. In places like Georgia, when Biden won by 12,000 votes, and Arizona, where he won by 10,000, the spending likely put him over the top.
