Russian forces claim they have successfully destroyed an American-supplied M1 Abrams main battle tank for the first time, coming two full years into the Ukraine war, outside the captured city of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.

The US-made advanced tank was reportedly taken out by a kamikaze drone or loitering munition launched by Russia's 15th Motorized Rifle Brigade. Russian state media accounts made the announcement Monday and published video purporting to show the destruction of the M1 Abrams main battle tank.

Oxford, UK, was one of the first to announce a scheme where car owners will be fined for driving outside of their local area.  The first low traffic neighbourhoods (“LTNs”) were introduced in Church Cowley, Temple Cowley and Florence Park areas in March 2021.  These LTNs are collectively known as the east Oxford LTNs.

Despite receiving a backlash to their unpopular plans, the council is pressing forward.

“Work starts today (26 February) on Oxford streets to prepare for six traffic filters as part of a trial approved by Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet in November 2022,” Oxfordshire County Council announced.

To stop prohibited vehicles driving without a permit, the traffic filters or “bus gates” will be monitored by automatic number plate recognition (“ANPR”) cameras. “Residents in Oxford and some areas just outside the city will be able to apply for a permit allowing them to drive through the traffic filters on up to 100 days per year,” the council said.

The European Union is proposing a controversial piece of legislation that would effectively ban the right-to-repair for vehicles older than 15 years old. The aim according to the European Commission is “to renew the car fleet and encourage Europeans to buy new, environmentally friendly vehicles.” Thus, forcing individuals to buy newer cars, and more often while many other individuals will undoubtedly be priced out of car ownership, which will satisfy what is arguably, the real aim, the planned immobilisation of the people.

In the convoluted narrative surrounding the Ukraine crisis, recent revelations have brought to light a series of covert operations and questionable dealings that challenge the mainstream narrative. The New York Times is now reporting that the US had 12 secret spy bases in Ukraine, playing a role in the toppling of the government in 2014. The intricate web extends to Pentagon partnerships with Ukrainian biolabs, plans for Ukraine to join NATO, Hunter Biden's involvement with Burisma, and Joe Biden's alleged withholding of $1 billion until Ukraine fired the Burisma prosecutor.

Just when you thought the skies over America were finally free of Chinese spy balloons … well they are, at least in this latest case of a mystery object that was spotted while flying over the western US.

Officials at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) observed the balloon, reportedly floating at an altitude between 43,000 and 45,000 feet, late last week and on Friday scrambled a fighter jet to intercept it to get a closer look. The jet determined there was no threat to US national security, finding it was likely a hobbyist balloon.

A little more light is being shed on the fate of NASA's Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, thanks to fresh images snapped by the Perseverance rover.

After an expectation-busting 72 flights over almost three years, the helicopter was finally retired in January 2024 when NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) found rotor damage following a quick up-and-down flight to check the helicopter's systems.

NASA confirmed that Ingenuity was upright and in communication with ground controllers but would fly no more. Images released at the time indicated that the tip of at least one rotor blade had suffered damage. Subsequent images showed a missing upper rotor blade, however, the pictures were frustratingly low resolution.

Some recent Intel microprocessors are crashing systems – and the problem appears related to the chips' firmware and clock rates settings.

RAD, a maker of game development tools for Epic Games' Unreal Engine, on Wednesday published a note that describes decompression failures with its Oodle Data software and crashes in games built with Unreal.

The coding biz, a subsidiary of Epic, said it believes the errors stem from a hardware glitch affecting mainly Intel Core i9 13900K and 14900K processors, and possibly 13700, 14700, and related silicon too.

Microsoft says that February 13's security update for Windows 11 might "face installation issues."

Installation may get as far as 96 percent, but for some unlucky Windows 11 customers a message is then shown: "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes. Please keep your computer on."

Complaints about installation problems have rumbled since patch KB5034765 was released, and last night Microsoft finally admitted via its Windows Release Health dashboard that there is a problem.

Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2 are affected, though Microsoft has yet to detail precisely what might have gone wrong. The current workaround is to delete the hidden folder C:\$WinREAgent, possibly restart, and then try the update again. According to Microsoft: "After following these steps, installing the February 2024 security update should succeed."

Undersea data cables in the Red Sea have reportedly been damaged, months after Yemeni Houthi rebels threatened to do so.

At least 15 submarine cables pass through the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea, a body of water just 26km wide at some points. Yemen is the Strait’s northern shore.

The first reports of damage to submarine cables off the coast of Yemen began emerged on Monday morning, with Israeli news outlet Globes claiming that four cables (EIG, AAE-1, Seacom and TGN-EA) had experienced damage. Seacom has reportedly confirmed damage to a cable it operates on a stretch between Kenya and Egypt.

"The location of the cable break is significant due to its geopolitical sensitivity and ongoing tensions, making it a challenging environment for maintenance and repair operations," Seacom said. "The team is currently working towards restoration timelines and will communicate these plans with our clients."

The Ukrainian counteroffensive failed, and Russia’s liberation of Avdeyevka signalled a new reality that Volodymyr Zelensky was forced to recognise, the American magazine Time wrote on February 24. Yet, despite the acknowledgement of the impossibility of Ukraine’s victory growing day by day, the Kiev regime insists on begging for more weapons from Western countries.

“The long-awaited counteroffensive last year failed,” Anatol Lieven, director of the Eurasia Program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, wrote in an editorial, adding that Washington’s rhetoric had changed accordingly.

“The Biden Administration’s strategy is now to sustain Ukrainian defence until after the US presidential elections, in the hope of wearing down Russian forces in a long war of attrition,” Lieven continued.

According to the author, the hope now is that Kiev’s forces will achieve the long-awaited breakthrough in 2025 or perhaps the following year, but “Russia will never agree at the negotiating table to surrender land that it has managed to hold on the battlefield.”

“Many Ukrainians in private were prepared to accept the loss of some territories as the price of peace if Ukraine failed to win them back on the battlefield and if the alternative was years of bloody war with little prospect of success. The Biden Administration needs to get America on board too,” he added.

However, Lieven explains that those who believe in Ukraine’s final victory “have engaged in hopes that range from the overly optimistic to the magical,” with an example being the delusional retired US Army General, Ben Hodges, who pushes the false idea “that Russia can be defeated, and even driven from Crimea, by long-range missile bombardment.”

Google parent company Alphabet lost over $70 billion in market value, with stock prices falling as much as 4.4 percent on Monday following the pause on Google Gemini’s AI image creator and posts surfaced of Gemini’s responses in the chat feature.

According to Bloomberg, Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes warned in a research note that problems that have arisen with Gemini may fuel the perception that Google is "an unreliable source for AI," as many companies try to launch their own AI platforms.

"We have been arguing that Search behavior is about to change - with new AI-infused features," said Reitzes. "This ‘once in a generation’ change by itself creates opportunities for competitors, but even more if a meaningful portion of users grow concerned about Google’s hallucinations and bias."

The plunge came as Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said on Monday that Gemini’s image generating feature would be offline for a "few weeks" to address issues raised, according to the New York Post.
